To ignore it would be the height of folly. Today the world is full of a great hope of deliverance from war. Industrial conflict, next to wars the greatest waster of the world’s substance, has cost the United States four billion dollars in a single year. Beyond that is an in- calculable loss because from lack of good will the worker stays his hand. If nothing is done in this critical time to increase the stock of good will in Amer- ican industry, the return of prosperity will complete again the vicious circle of reprisals, bitterness and high cost production. Militant labor union leaders will not help to create good will. Learning nothing from the mistakes of the auto- cratic employer, whose type is passing, they keep on aim- ing at control by superior force. But 1921 brought many checks to union autocracy. Learning nothing from the mistakes of the auto- cratic employer, whose type is passing, they keep on aim- ing at control by superior force. But 1921 brought many checks to union autocracy. In some respects the way is more open than in years for industrial disarmament through co-operation and conciliation. What remains is to decide in what ways the good will of employing corporations toward their employees can be best ex- pressed—then going right to work to express it.
