Today they know that they have spent two years in merely starting on the task. It took all of 1919 to make it plain that having just finished destroying kaiser autocracy in Europe, they would not tol- erate labor union autocracy at home. Policemen at Boston, railroad workers, coal miners, steel strikers, all in turn got that answer. It wasa yeat’s work well done and worth all it cost. Nineteen-twenty brought the great strike of the American people against war prices—joint product of extravagance, speculation in commodities, sellers’ profiteering, and the de- lusion that high wages and low performance make a worker’s a ET oe paradise.
