The importance of a good heater for raising boiler feed water to the highest possible temperature by means of exhaust steam from the engine is meeting with in- creasing appreciation. The design of the Reynolds heater and purifier, built by Messrs. E. P. Allis & Co., of Milwaukee, Wis., which we illustrate on this page, is, therefore, not without interest. The | engraving represents a vertical section, | showing all the essential features. The} body of the heater is made of boiler iron, and the base, or settling chamber, and the cap are of cast iron. The interior heads, into which the tubes are secured, are of boiler irou, and the tubes are held by ex panding their ends precisely as in a tubular boiler.
