The blast furnace capacity of the works is at present equal to all requirements. All the old furnaces at Johnstown having recently been rebuilt, there are now six modern stacks owned by the company at that point, one at East Conemaugh, and two at Holli daysburg, making nine in all. All of them are in operation at present. The East Cone maugh Furnace is at work on spiegeleisen, but it will be blown out and given a thorough overhauling in the near future, which means an enlargement and conse quently increased capacity. The company are having excellent success in the manufacture of steel railroad axles, which is a comparatively new field for them. f Wir mt Fig. 2.—Side Elevation. NEW ROD AND BOLT-TURNING M and steel axles, the results accomplished by the Cambria steel axle are among the yet realized A special quality of sarth being made at these works for springs and boiler plate. The spring steel is of a quality equal to crucible spring steel, while the plate steel is of exceptionally high grade. This is stated to be due to the successful introduction of the Krupp dephosphorizing process, by which a special metal of exceptional pur lity is obtained for use in the open- hearth. About 1800 tons a month of |pig iron, containing from 0.18 to» of phosphorus, are successfully treated in the Krupp washer, which extracts |from 85 to go per cent. of the phosphorus, best steel is open h 0.2 |} part of the carbon. From 200 to 1500 tons of ingots can be bloomed iZzo. this purpose. A round bar of suitable size is first rolled, and afterward hammered into shape. After carefu! experiments they be- lieve that they have discovered a remedy for the uncerteinty in steel, which has caused much prejudice against the use of that metal for such a purpose, This remedy is temper- | ing. All their axles are now tempered in water, and the consequence is that little trouble is experienced in mecting the most | exacting requirements of railroad officials. They name these axles ‘‘ toughened axles.” The record of tests made since the adoption of the toughening process is remarkable. The conpany have adopted the plan of continuing the inspection tests of the railroads for their own information. Many of the test axles have been struck 45 additional blows after pass- ing inspection, without having been broken. In one case an effort was made to break the axle, and it was found necessary to apply 121! blows. In all, 89 toughened axles have | been tested uy to this time, with a loss by breakage of but 334 per cent., and those broken were among the first that had been | toughened, before the men were much skilled in their work. This includes three axles broken under the regular railroad inspec: | tion t2st, which were defective for the reason just assigned. Of the last 5000 axles toughened, 37 test axles have all had 50 blows and none of them have broken, 13 other test axles not having had the con- tinued test for want of time. As compared with the average record of defective irop | allow the rails to lie there until they were bon, to be transferred by Jedle, but will quickly cool and harden. When these pigs are fractured they are found to be very porous or sponge-like, quite sonorous ana of a grayish white color. Boiler plate made of this metal have shown under test a reduc- tion in area of 68 per cent., 32 7 per cent. |of elongation in 8 incbes, 50.420 pounds ultimate strength and 32,860 pounds elastic limit. Its uniformity is a striking character- istic. The company, by the way, do not | manufacture boiler plate, but sell slabs to plate mills. The rail mill was reconstructed last winter, and in March it began to turn out rails by the so-called automatic process. Single- length rails are now rolled, but, after the steel works are rebuilt, it is probable that ; the heating furnaces will be enlarged, and | double-lengti rails will then be made. Quite | an improvement has been made the past sum- mer in the arrangement of the hot beds and straightening department. An extension was built to the rail mill large enough to perfectly cold. The straighteners can con- sequently take their time to straighten rails, and are not now hurried along by the mill. The rod mill is running very satisfactorily as to production, turning out an average of 75 tons a day, double turn, of No. 5 wire rods, A considerable part of the Bessemer steel made this year has gone into| the Johnson patent street rail, which the |}company have manufactured with special | rolls for the Jobnson Steel Street Rail Com- as well as the sulphur, silicon and a large | o} the Cutter pany. This rail has a peculiar section which causes it to be known among the mill hands as the °° jaybird rail,”’ Very little iron is now worked in the mills of the company. Oaly three of the numerous puddling fur naces throughout these works now remain, and they are merely used for busheling scrap iron for the manufacture of bolts and nuts for track fastenings, &c. Natural gas is used for heating purposes and for raising steam, but latterly the sup- ply has not been quite sufficient for every once seen department of the works, and coal has been | resorted to under some of the boilers, but this will be remedied in a few weeks by the completion of an additional gas line now under construction. The Gautier steel department of the works is in active operation, turning out various steel products, from wire rods and bar steel down to all gauges and classes of wire, agricultural shapes, &c. Extensions He ads . WATERMAN, PROVIDENCE, R. I. are being made to some of the buildings to provide additional room needed, but this has long been the rule bere as at other similar works, . - a - New Rod and Bolt-Turning Machine. Messrs. Nicholson & Waterman, of Provi dence, R_ I., have recently put on the mar- ket an ingenious machine for turning rods and bolts, its object being to produce more uniform work, especially in the case of bolts, and to bring the cost of working below that of any of the prevailing methods. The en- gravings which we publish on this page and on page 11 will enable our readers to get a very good idea of the design adopted. Briefly described, the machine provides for a number of cutters, consisting of simple pieces of bar steel tempered and ground and held in suitable cutter-heads. These are arranged in such a manner that the end of the blank as it protrudes from one cutter head comes into position to be operated upon by the next, and so on in succession until it has reached the last cutter-head of the series, when it will be in such position as to be acted upon by all of them simulta- neously. ‘There are also means for centering the bolt and sustaining it against flexure from the strain put upon it by the several sets of cutters, and, lastly, means for re volving the bolt, feeding it forward to the cutters, withdrawing it when the cutting has been completed, stopping the machine for removing the completed bolt, and re placing a fresh b which we will describe S> far as the means for ink and other details holding the eut ting too's and centering the bolt are con cerned, all of the itter-h ployed in the machine are identical, so that a description of one will suffice for all. We should here also that dis crepancies will be discovered when compar ing the perspective view with the other engravings. These are due to the fact that the elevation, front and details were not made from working drawings, but are rather of a diagramatic character. These slots are slightly tan- gential with respect to the eye of the disk and hub, as seen in Fig. 5, and inclined relative to the axis of the eye, as seen in Fig. 7 In each of these slots is placed a cutter, B, which is clamped and held firmly by a set screw. The working extremities of these cutters project into the eye of the hub, and the stem of the blank is turned down by slowly inserting it between the extremi- ties of the cutters and revolving it by special mechanism.
