As the tubes, which are of weldless steel, are expanded into the wing cylinders and separator, it is evident that the holes into which the tubes are expanded cannot be touching each other; but it is necessary that the outer rows of tubes should touch so as to form the close walls necessary to constitute an approxi mately smoke-tight flue, the gases, of course, ascending in the space batween these walls. There are In order to arrive at this end the holes are | spaced in each row their own diameter apart, any two rows thus forming a zig zag. The tubes of the two outer rows of each spot from whence they spring, so that they travel side by side, each one touching its neighbor, until they reach within a few |inches from the separator, where they have to be bent apart again in order to enter the zig zag row of holes provided for them in the separator. We thus account for four of the eight rows of holes in both wing cylinder and separator. The other four rows have ‘tubes expanded into them, but these tubes kig. 1.—Front Elevation. THE the two wing cylinders placed at the sides {are not bent so as to be brought into con of the grate. The down-comers are curved pipes contained within an extension of the casing at the back of the boiler. The nor mal level of the water 1s about half-way up the separator, although considerable latitude may be allowed in this respect. From the wing cylinders the water rises in the gener ating tubes to the separator, a greater or less propottion, according to the extent of the re and wolurme of feed, becoming, in its issage, converted into steam. In order it the separator may properly perform its functions it is necessary that it should not be ject to the heat of the furnace, and this t to a great extent governs the shape of generating tubes. Fig. 3 shows the irse they take in their passage from the ving cylinders tothe separator. The greater imber are arranged as shown in continuous \| lines, those in partially dotted lines being y the two groups placed at each end, and vhich are dent differently to the rest for the irpose of protecting the ends of the sing, as will be explained later. It will be 0, then, that the generating tubes spring n the wing cylinders. As may be seen by Fig. 2, the axis i tact, but follow the course of the flue, the gases playing freely all round them Ic will be evident that the number of these internal tubes is only lim ited by the possibility of their accommo- dation in entering the cylinders. They might be left out entirely without affecting the principle of the boiler, but in such a case the heating surface weuld naturally be very much curtailed. The tubes of the outer rows, which form the walls of the flue, not | touching each other until within a few inches of the wing cylinders, there must, of course, be a triangular space left between each pair of aljacent tubes, and it is through these spaces that the gases pass into the tube formed flue. The gases, having ascended | through the flue, pass out through the cor responding spaces where the tubes enter the separator and thence to the chimney. Such spaces as are not required for the passage of gases are soopped by fire c'ay or asbestos, and the outer casing, which forms a smoke jacket for the whole boiler, is protected hy sheet asbestos, &c. The eight tubes at each end of the boiler are curved in such a man- ner as to sbut in the front and back of the furnace, but the space that they cannot be made to cover is built up with fire brick. The wing cylinders are protected from the direct heat of the furnace by dwarf fire brick wal!s, which form the side boundaries of the grate. In any arrangement of pipe boiler the first point that any one who has had expe rience in such apparatus will look to will be the provision made for circulatiun, for this is the rock on which most water-tube boilers split, and is, indeed, the one great difficulty to be overcome in their construction. It is easy enougo to generate steam by pumping water into a pipe (or series of pipes) and subjecting it to the heat of afurnace. In fact, the generation of steam in such a way is all too easy, for its formation may be so rapid in that part of the pipe which is hot- test as to drive all water before it, just as cylinder are bent a few inches above the | New York, Thursday, September 29, 1887 an explosion of gunpowder will drive a projectila from a course, will represent a violent priming of the Loiler, and the forced into the separator generally provided for keeping the water from being carried into the steam pipe. When the thus driven out of the pipe, unless provision be made for supp!ying its place with fresh water, the steam in the pipe will rapidly be- come superheated, and if the fire is very fierce the pipe will get overheated and rap idly burn away. The coil boiler invented by Mr. James Herreshoff is perfect in regard to circulation so long as the boiler is being drawn upon for steam. But it has the pecul- iarity of carrying no water level, and as soon as the stop-valve is closed difficulties arise, in addition to which the quantity of water carried is so small that a trifling loss in working leads to superheating and its consequent evils. At any rate, the Herres hoff boiler has been found in England so dif ficult to manage that its use has now, we believe, been abandoned, althouch it achieved a remarkable success in its earlier days. In this country, however, a consid erable number have been solid, Another pipe boiler that attracted a good deal of attention a short time ago was that intro- duced by Mr. Loftus Perkins. The more rapidly steam is generated in the tubes, and the more rapidly it drives the water be fore it into the separator, so much the more rapidly will the water flow down the ‘*down-comers” and rise again in the cir- culating tubes. It may be objecte! that the generation of steam will cause a downward pressure toward the wing cylinders, a3 well as an upward pressure toward the separator— in fact, that the pressure will be balanced ; but there is the difference in specific gravi ties of the mixed water and steam in the generating tubes and the solid water in the ‘*‘ down comers,”’ and this acts to promote energetic circulation. In auy case, however, the workiny of the boiler io prac tical use is what will determine its value. The dryness of the steam delivered t> the engines is a feature that requires considera tion with boilers of this class, and in order to secure this end special provision is made In Fig. 2 may be seen a serrated plate placed inside the separatur. Fig. 4 shows the manner in which the notches are formed A triangular piece is first taken out and the cutis coptinued as shown by the line. This, of course, supposes an empty and cold boiler For smeller generators an apparatus has been designed to plug tubes without any one going in lo replace any of the inside tubes it would be necessary to cut out those stand ing in the way. Altogether, the introduc tion of the Thornycroft water tune boiler constitutes an important step in the history of torpedo boat construction. During the past few years the principles on which the steam machinery of these boats is designed have been more or less ad pted in larger war vessels, and progress in the same direc tion is still goin on.
