Since the introduction of the Siemens re- venerative furnace there have been many attempts to improve upon it, but with little success, for, while some of the later fur- naces, both of American and foreign inven- tion, have shown themselves superior in some points, they have all proved inferior, in the long run, to the Siemens furnace for reheating purposes, and to the Siemens- Martin for open-hearth steel melting, until the invention, about two years ago, by Mr. H. W. Lash, of Pittsburgh, of an open hearth furnace, of which there are now 12 in use in Pittsburgh. Messrs. Carnegie, Phipps & Co., Limited, have four of 40 tons capacity each per heat; Messrs.
