Since the introduction of the Siemens re- venerative furnace there have been many attempts to improve upon it, but with little success, for, while some of the later fur- naces, both of American and foreign inven- tion, have shown themselves superior in some points, they have all proved inferior, in the long run, to the Siemens furnace for reheating purposes, and to the Siemens- Martin for open-hearth steel melting, until the invention, about two years ago, by Mr. H. W. Lash, of Pittsburgh, of an open hearth furnace, of which there are now 12 in use in Pittsburgh. Messrs. Carnegie, Phipps & Co., Limited, have four of 40 tons capacity each per heat; Messrs. Park Bro. & 1 | 4 i v4 dh ccc Ss See YW Nea . a . x W —_ \ Martin, where the flues are arranged along- side the melting chamber, the walls forming the flues being part of the wall of ‘the melt- ing chamber, so that the walls between the flues and the melting chamber become highly heated and are rapidly burned out, allow ing the molten metal to run through into the | regenerative chambers and choke them. This defect also exists in those furnaces where a slight air-space is left between the chamber and the flues, because this air- |} space does not extend to the full hight of the melting chamber. Again, the construc tion of the Lash furnace is such as to obvi- ate the hoisting of the materials to be charged into the furnace, the doors being easily accessible from the ground level, and to allow of any desired number of charging SSS ‘fed Ke AG s/y Zz > ale WMO Woo | thickness throughout, thereby avoiding the irregular expansion and contraction which takes place where a thin wall joins a heavy mass of brickwork, as in the case of the ports and side walls of the Siemens- Martin. It is claimed that when a Lash furnace is burned out the repairs can be made in one- | fifth the time and at one-fifth the cost of the | other of the same capacity. In the matter of waste there is no difference between this and the old form of furnace, the average being from 5 to 6 per cent, but, owing to the form of hearth, which allows of treat- ing the metal in a thin mass, and the con struction of the flues, the working is more rapid, and in the matter of labor the cost is far below the old practice, the average for Fig. 1.—S-ction Through E F, Fig. 3 THE LASH OPEN-HEARTH Co., Limited, five of 30 tons capacity each ; | doors and at any desired points, while in the the Linden Steel Company, Limited, one 20 tons; Messrs. Anderson, Du Puy & Co., Limited, one 15 tons, and Messrs. W. J. Hammond & Sons, Limited, one 15 tons. The first of these furnaces was built at the works of Messrs. Park Bro. & Co., Limited, about two years ago, since which time they have built, at various times, four additional ones, which, in view of the fact that they have two 15-ton Siemens-Martiu furnaces, | and that there is no one concern in this ‘ountry that has as extended and successful a trade in open hearth steel, is pointed out a most complimentary testimonial to the merits of the furnace and its inventor. In the accompanying cats, Figs. 1 and 2 are sectional elevations, and Fig. 3 plan of the furmace and pits. The furnace is so constructed as to permit of ready access on all sides for the purpose of charging and repair ; the gas and air flues are so arranged as tobe entirely isolated from the melting chamber and hearth, ex- cept where the flues enter the chamver, and to permit of a free and fall circulation of air around the melting chamber and hearth, thereby avoiding an excessive heating of the walls and consequent rapid burning out of the same. This is an important improve- ment upon the construction of the Siemens- usual construction the metal has to be raised to the level of the charging floor, usually 10 or 12 feet above the ground level, and can be charged from one side only, unless a movable platform is employed—an expedient seldom resorted to, as it would interfere with the movements of the ladle. Another important feature of this furnace is the ac- cessibility of the tapping-hole and ladle from the ground, thus avoiding the necessity of swinging platforms and stages from which to reach either the tapping hole of the hearth or the stopper-operating mechanism of the ladle. The metal is charged from all sides of the furnace, thus providing for a more rapid charging than is possible in the old form; and while one charge is being treated in the furnace, the materials for the following heat can be placed in convenient position for charging, which is impracticable in the usual construction, on account of the necessarily contracted area of the charging- floor. Our illustrations, for which we are indebted to Messrs. Lean & Blair, of Pittsburgh, the sole agents, represent a furnace as ordinarily built in Pittsburgh, being arranged for the use of natural gas, but in such a manner as to be readily altered to use producer gas. I The smoke nuisance in Chicago has been taken in hand by the Citizens’ Associa- tion, which is an organization gotten up for the purpose of reforming abuses of various | kinds, and vigorous efforts are promised toward the suppression of this annoyance. For some time the enforcement of the smoke ordinance has been but languid and spas- modic, but now the city authorities are be- ing prodded into some degree of usefulness on the subject. The chief offenders are large manufacturing establishments and the tugs which tow vessels on the Chicago River, ruuning through the heart of the city. The names of a number of large manufacturing concerns have _ recently been published in the Chicago papers as on the list of parties against whom complaints have been made by the Citizens’ Association, while the owners of tugs have been sufficiently stirred up to arrange for a consultation with the city authorities to devise some method of rendering them less offensive as smoke producers. As a great deal of bituminous coal is burned in dwelling houses, stores and office build- pletely abated even if the Citizens’ Associa- tion is successful in its campaign against manufacturers and tug owners. But, pos sibly, if a good beginning is thus made, means will be devised and measures taken to secure still greater relief from this prolific cause of complaint. — The Northwest Water Routes. ‘*The rapidly increasing trade with Lake Superior ports, and the desirability of hav- ing an independent passage between that water and Lake Huron on the Canalian side,” the Montreal Gazette reminds us, *‘ in- duced the Government last session to ask STEEL MELTING FURNACE. the auth. rity of Parliament for the con- | struction of a canal to overcome the Ste. | Marie rapids, and $1,000,000 was voted for this purpose. The original canal, built on | the American side by the United States | Government in 1855, served the purpose of the traffic down to 1881; it comprised two | locks, each 70 feet wide and 350 feet long | between gates, and accommodated vessels drawing 11% feet. In the quarter of a cent- | ury during which it was in use the quantity of freight passing through imcreased from 100,000 tons to 1,750,000 tons. The present | lock, which has been in service since 1881, is one of the largest in the world, having a width of 80 feet, but narrowing to 60 feet at the gates, a length of 515 feet, and a depth of 17 feet of water over the miter sills at the ordinary stage. With the opening of this locs the traffic rapidly enlarged, the | freight tonnage last season having been 4,527,000 tons, an increase of about 160 per | cent. in 5 years. Even this capacity is not | ample for the trade, as we learn from a statement of the secretary of the Lake Carriers’ Association that should the number | of vessels continue to increase in the same ratio as last season, in 3 years the normal capac- ity allowance will have been exceded, and | admitting that the size rather than the num- ber of vessels will increase in the future, al fact that the brickwork is of almost uniform | ings, the smoke nuisance will not be com- | blockade will be reache 1] 6 years hence un der the most favorable conditions. | ‘**The United States Government, in antici pation of this result, has already under taken the construction of another lock, on the site of the old ones, roo feet in width, 800 feet in length, and 2r feet of water on | the miter sills, and this work it is hoped to have completed in t891. The estimated cost |is $1,700,000. The secretary of the Lake | Carriers’ Association, in his letter on the |canal, says that the daily tonnage through |the Sault canal is larger than that through the great Suez canal: ‘In July, 1886, the only month for which I have figures for both canals, the Suez canal shipments were 528,671 official net tons. The tonnage through the Sault canal for the same period was 561,228 tons, or an excess of 32,557 tons for the month. The shipments through the Sault canal for the season of 1886 aver aged about 19,686 perday. The shipments through the Suez canal for 1884 were 5,871,500 tons for the 365 days, or an aver- age of 16,087 per day.’ The American Government has undertaken to shorten and | otherwise improve the channel through St. Mary’s River by deepening Hay Lake, by which a much less circuitous route will be afforded. This improvement will shorten the distance between lakes Superior and Huron 11 miles out of 60; but what is of far more importance, it will allow the pas- sage of vessels drawing 20 feet of water, and will give a route navigable by night, which is now impossible. The Canadian canal ought not to be inferior at least to the eXisting one on the American side, and we believe it should have as large a capacity as the new lock determined on by the United States. In the long run it will be more economical to spend $2,000,000 on a large canal now than to construct one that ina very few years will prove inadequate to pass the class of vessels that navigate the great lakes.
