A New Engine Lathe. This is quite a feature where large quanti- ties of work of one kind are being done, besides making it very handy to drop rack pinions out if desired when cutting screws. The good work accomplished by it, how- ever, and the evident demand which existed for a lathe of this kind, indaced the manufacturers to put iton the market, and by mak- ing it in large numbers they were euabled to correspondingly reduce the cost. The lathe is made with special conveniences for quick and easy handling and is of fine work- manship throughout. The spindles are made of high grade special! steel and are hollow, those of the 19-inch swing lathe having a 14-inch hole clear through, and those of the 21- inch swing @ 1%-inch hole. The boxes are of phosphor-bronze. The bearmgs of the spindles are extra- ordinarily large and long, and the cone pulleys are of large diameter for wide belts. The gearing has extra width of face, and runs silent- ly, and the pinion engaging with the face wheel is of steel. The details of the design will be understood with little difficulty from Figs. 2 and 3 on this puge, and Fig. 4 on page g, Fig. 2 rep- resenting a longitudinal section, Fig. 3 a rear view of the apron, and Fig. 4 @ transverse section of the lathe. The lead screw is of steel, extra large, and is placed directly un- der the front V on which the tail stock slides, and inside of the bed. It takes hold of the carriage di- rectly under the line of strain when cutting screws. This is a_ special feature, worthy of note. The car- riage may be moved along the bed by hand by means of the crank at the left of the aprcn in Fig. 1 (at the right in Fig. 3), which acts on the pinion L, and through it on the wheel G and rack pinion J. Each lathe is provided with a full set of gears to cut from 2 to 18 threads, including 11%-pipe thread. Messrs. Lodge, Davis & Co. are making aspecialty of these lathes and are manufacturing them in lots ef not less than 100 at a time. The mechanism for throwing in and out the half nuts is entirely new, and is operated from the front of the carriage by means of the lever shown in Fig. 1. All the feeds are reversed in the apron, a rear view of which is given in Fig. 3, and here we find some of the most interesting portions of the mechanism. The double bevel which is mounted on the shaft shown immediately back of the apron in Fig. 1. On the back of the large bevel wheel E is fixed a small pinion which gears into the friction-wheel N, driven by the friction- plate F.
