Naphtha Launch Engines. The demand which has been developed during the past few years for safe, econom- ical and easily managed engines of compara- tively low power, well adapted for service in small shops, domestic uses, and for the pro- pulsion of small boats, has given rise to a large number of designs calculated to meet the requirements. In their respective fields | = Fig. 3, and from the front end of the shaft motion is transmitted to a valve-shaft, D, for operating the slide-valves. This valve-shaft is arranged above and parallel with the main shaft, longitudinally of the valve-chest B, and has its bearings in the ends of the latter, the front end of the valve-shaft projecting through a stuffing-box above the main shaft, as in Fig 3. The slide-valves F (see Fig. 4) are each provided with two parallel upright lugs, forming a guide-jaw, in which is fitted a square slide-block bored through horizon- tally to receive the corresponding crank-pin of the valve-sbaft D. The induction open ing of the valve is marked f, which, when above the port e, admits the live vapor from the valve-chest tothe cylinder. Between the lips of the valve is the ordinary arch or channel, which, when in the position shown in Fig. 4, establishes communication between the port e and the exhaust port. In the diagrams in Fig. 6 the relative po upper end with oppositely placed nipples g, for the attachment of inlet and outlet valves (not shown in the drawings) and a naphtha pipe leading from the tank to the boiler or retort. As implied by the name, the working fluid is naphtha yapor (also used for fuel), generated and utilzed in exactly the same manner as steam, @ special form of boiler and a small three- cylinder single-acting engine being provided for the purpose. The general design of the latter will be readily understood from Figs. 2, 3 and 4, representing a general view and two sec- tions. The frame is a box-shaped casting, A, Figs. 3 and 4, its lower portion, A’, being made somewhat in the form of a trough, and bolted by meens of flanges aa to the middle portion. To the top of this portion is bolted the valve-sest A*, and to this again the cover B, which virtually forms the valve chest. From the bottom of the trough A’, which also serves as the base or bed plate of the engine, project upward cross partitions, a’, which serve as rests for the pillow- blocks of the main shaft, which is coupled to the propelier-shaft C' by a key, c, within the hab of the oil pump eccentric, as will be further described. Both main and propeller- shafts have bearings in the ends of the | NAPHTHA ENGINE AND LAUNCH, by way of the curved exhaust-port. This latter is also formed in the seat A’*. The cranks are placed at angles of 120°, avoid- ing dead centers. The valve shaft D has three cranks for regulating the throw of the valves, and which are also arranged at an angle of 120° to each other, to corres- p2nd with the cranks of the pistons, and are age set a little in advance of the ower cranks, so as togive lead to the valves. A free exhaust is thus secured and the pis tons are cushioned on the return strokes, Ball and socket joints connect the pistons and rods, a firmer connection being unneces- sary, inasmuch asthe working pressure is on the pistons only on the down strokes. The pistons further are elongated, having large bearing surfaces. It will be readily under- stood that as the valve and main shafts are arranged parallel with each other, the cylin- ders being vertical, the motion of the slide valves is at right anzles to the motion of the pistons and to the axes of the shafts, thus affording the advantage of a comparatively large and rapid movement of the valves at the end of the strokes of the pistons when the movement of these is slow and small. It will be seen that the cylinder of piston 1 is about to receive live pressure-gas | and the piston about to start on the down- | stroke. No. 2 has started on the up-stroke and is exhausting. No. 3, which is at the same elevation as No. 2, but yet moving downward, has its inlet-port e by the valve, and is impelled by the expansion of | the inclosed vapor. The last three or lowest valye-port sections in Fig. 6 indicate the | relative positions of the valves at the end | of one-fourth revolution. The valves of No. | 1 and 2 are moving in directions opposite to | those before. Piston No. 1 is half-way on | the down-stroke and its valve has cut off. | No. 2 is about three-fourths of its way on the up-stroke and is yet exhausting, and No 3 | has started on its up-stroke and is also ex- hausting. Anautomatic naphtha pump is arranged at the rear end of the trough A‘ above the main shaft and in line with the row of cylinders. The pump cylinder G, in Fig. 5, is shown to the condenser until safe pressure is re- stored. Motion is transmitted from the main shaft to the valve-shaft by means of the gears J, J' and I, the intermediate wheel J‘ turning | on a stud secured to the engine frame. In| order to control the valves for stopping, | starting and reversing, the following means have been provided: The wheel I is free to turn upon the shaft D, and to it is secured a block, i (see Fig. 12, page 19), which is of size and shape adapted to fit and slide in a circular slot, J, in another wheel, L (Fig. 10) This wheel is keyed on the shaft VD. If it is desired to reverse the en- gine, it is only necessary to turn the hand- wheel M (or hold it back a little against the motion of the engine), so that by means of the cog-wheel m, pinion m', and cog-seg- j}ment /', the wheel L will advance on the motion of the crank or wheel I, so that the block i lodges against the opposite end of the circular slot /, thereby turning the valve shaft D, and consequently reversing the valves, and thereby the engines. By turn t be moved to about the middle of the slot l, the valves will get in such position that the engine will instantly stop, one of the pistons then being at the end of its stroke and the other pistons, having both pressures on to counteract each other.
