The cross-head is equal to the length of the crank, and travels over the end of the slide surface, thus securing even wear, The crank-shaft s of wrought iron, with a well counter- balanced crank, permitting the engine to run ata high speed with great steadiness. {he cylinder bas the Babbitt & Harris pat- ent piston packing and an improved slide- valve, which gives an unusually large steam ‘pening with short travel of valve. The capacity for receiving steam permits the engines to be worked up to a high speed and develop their maximum power. The boiler, which is designed for burning wood, is fully explained by Figs. 2 and 3, and but little further description is therefore necessary. In cross-section it is somewhat of a horseshoe shape ‘The outer shell is riveted to the fire box plate, which extends to the skids, forming the support of the whole. This arrangement gives an open bottom under the grates, providing air surface and a means of disposition of ashes which is impossible in a closed bottom tire-box. The bridge is composed of three cross water tubes expanded into the fire- box, giving an excellent circulation of water and a marked addition to the capacity of the boiler. Behind the bridge the com hustion chamber is closed at the bottom by a plate. The heat is returned through tubes to the front end, where access for cleaning is easy. The chimney is of large | diameter and considerable length, so that | the natural draft is sufficient for the gen- eration of the rated power. For conven- | ience the exhaust is turned into the stack | but without contraction of the end of the | pipe, and such use will extinguish sparks | should any be raised when the fire is stirred. ! Lubimoff & Co., in the Ural dis trict, near Solikamsk, where the ammonia process, for which they have bought the rights from Mr. Solvay, is exclusively used. These works have turned out annually about 11,300 tops of caustic soda; but, ‘having been recently enlarged, an output of 24,200 tons is expected for this year. The same firm have bought a site at Ekaterinoslav, where they propose to erect a second estab lishment, to turn out about 16,000 tons of caustic soda per year, also by the ammonia process ; so that they will be able to put 40,000 tons of soda annually upon the Rus sian market, | i a HI = ce Alloyed with a small per cent. of silver, aluminium loses much of its malleability, but with 5 per cent. of silver it can be worked well, and takes a more beautiful polish than the pure metal.
