It will be sticed at a glance that the tool is very eavily built. The spindle is made from forged steel, and has journals of ample ameter and length for the work required, ith holes through them 1% inches in ameter. The cone has four grades for a ,-inch belt, the largest section being 15 iches in diameter. Itis powerfully geared. lhe turret is 13 inches in diameter, and has imovementof 16inches. This feature is not learly apparent from the cut, the arrange- meut being partially hidden by the spoke- wheel. The adjusting of the stop is quickly and easily accomplished. There are six holes, each 2 inches diameter ; between face-plate and turret is 27 inches, which of course can be decreased by liding the turret-base. The turret-base is securely clamped to the bed by ec ertric bolts, one at each end of the base piece, as illustrated, and is easily moved to any position on the bed by a pinion working into a rack, the feed being oper ative at any point. The pinion is worked by the crank shown in the engraving. This particular feature cannot fail to meet with ready appreciation, and constitutes one of | the extreme distance | | and Chucking Lathe. LATHES, BUILT BY THE true hole, no tool or fixture being removed from the machine. It is claimed that with this ma- chine one man can easily chuck double the number of holes possible to be done on the old fashioned chucking lathes. In Fig. 3 we show a 14-inch turret-head combination stud and chucking lathe. The engraving shows the tool arranged with a cutting off block and the flat drill chucking before. Wirth a drip pan and oil-pot, as shown, and without but with a suitable steel ecbuck the machine is a fully equipped stud or screw machine. With the cutting-off block and steel chuck removed and a universal chuck added, it becomes a first-class chucking lathe capable of doing light work with accuracy and speed. The spindle here also is of forged steel. The cone has four sections for a 2%-inch belt. The turret is self-revolving, and furnished with automatic feed and stop motion. The diameter of the turret is 8 inches. It has six holes 14 inches diameter. The move ment of the turret slide is 8 inches. The bed is 5 feet long. Fig. 4 represents a 14-inch lathe, designed specially for quick work on either brass, iron or steel, The cone, which is of the 4 | step type, is furnished with a brake, as shown. The construction of ironclads at Sebastopol and Nicolaeff is exercising considerable ip fluence on the development of iron and steel works and rolling mills in the province of Ekaterinoslav. A little more than two years ago the semi-official Briansk Company increased its capital by nearly £250,000 in order to erect new works in the Krivoy Rog district, as a branch establishment to its colossal works at Briansk, and during the past winter 1000 men have been employed day and night hastening their completion, in response to the pressure of the Govern ment and the commencement of rival un- dertakings by foreign firms. The Krivoy Rog district is believed to contain very rich deposits of iron ore, and the new Briansk establishment is pitched within 20 miles of the town of Ekaterinoslav, close to tbe works Messrs. Cockerill are erecting. works of the Briansk Company are expected to be finished by the end of April. Bl | century later the first mention is made existence in the now famous oil regions of Pennsylvania, where, until 1850, petroleum was collected from the surface of streams and pools in small quantities for medicinal purposes. The introduction of shale oil from Scotland directed the attention to our natural oil, and the practicability of its con version into a purified illuminating oil was readily demonstrated. With the increasing demand the problem arose how to increase the production, which was solved by the late E. L. Drake, ‘who, beyinning to sink the first artesian oil well on June, 1859, ‘‘ struck oil” the following August at a depth of 70 feet. The production of the Pennsylvania o') fields, which during that year may have reached 2000 barrels, did not fall below 20,000,000 barrels since 1879, and attained the enormous amount of 31,784,190 barrels In 1552.
