In the operation of the reciprocating plunger pump well-known difficulties are encountered, among them the resistance pr duced on changing the direction of the current within the chamber by reversal of the motion of the plunger. This resistance increases with the speed. Then there is the necessity for subdivision of the currenc on passing the small valve openings, and the impact of the fluid against the valves them- selves, which offer a direct impediment to. the flow, the aggregate result being loss of power, much work being done besides that | required for tke unubstructed movement of a | column of fluid.
