New York, Thursday, Vol. XX XIX: No. 16. Positive Piston Pump. In the operation of the reciprocating plunger pump well-known difficulties are encountered, among them the resistance pr duced on changing the direction of the current within the chamber by reversal of the motion of the plunger. This resistance increases with the speed. Then there is the necessity for subdivision of the currenc on passing the small valve openings, and the impact of the fluid against the valves them- selves, which offer a direct impediment to. the flow, the aggregate result being loss of power, much work being done besides that | required for tke unubstructed movement of a | column of fluid. The positive piston pump, of which we present engraviogs on this page, and which is built by Messrs, Robert Wetherill & Co., of Chester, Pa,, is designed tu overcome) these difficulties, and, as it produces perfect | suction and forcing by the movement of a piston in one direction only, it applies the power without any resistances o:her th n those presented by an uninter: upted column | of fluid. ‘The result is claimed to be a very marked saving in power, in first cost, in wear and tear ard io the spacs occupied. The pump is duplex in its action, having | two annuiar chambers, one on euch side of the central partiuon, which divides tke interior at right angies with the axis of motion. In each chamber travels a single piston, with its supporting wings, both moving in the same direction, one be:ng opposed to and held in balance by the other. ‘This will be readily understood from an examination of Fig. 2. This bal- ance includes all the moving parts of the pump, wich the flow of fluid through them. ! The suction being central, the fluid to be pumped passes through the internal cylin- der (see Fig. 1), which is attached to and revolves with the main shaft. Tbis cylinder supports the pistons, and has openings be- hind them between the wings. Through these openings the fluid passes, and is aided in its cuurse as it goes from the center out- ward by screw-propellor shaped suction blades within the cylinder. Centriiuyal force also aids the flow of fluid as itis drawn into the chambers behind the pistons. The pistons in their travel cause a perfect suc- tion in the same manner as does a recipro- cating plunger, the ends of the annular chambers being perfectly closed by the abutments, which revolve together with the pistons, and by the peculiar water-packing. This will be understood from the cross sec- tion. Through an opening in the abutment cylinder the fluid finds passage, but imme- diately after it the closing 1s again made. While the suction is taking place behind the pistons the contents of the chambers before them is being continuously forced through the discharge opening, which offers a free passage in a direct tangent with the movement in the pump and the action of the pistons. The pump we illustrate is in use at the Record Paper Malis, Elkton, Md., to supply water fur large filtering reservoirs. Its capacity is 108,000 gallons per hour, The pipes are 16 inches in diameter, the flow through them being at the rate of 173 feet ’ per minute. The engine is directly at- ; tached, and the power applied is only about Hardware, Iron A cw ll 5 Nin 6.5 horse-power per 10 feet of lift. In conse- quence of the positive character of both suction and forcing, the direct easy flow of the current through the pump, and the effective packing supplied by the fluid itself, through a peculiar provision, no other pack- ing is found necessary, except when work- ing agaiust very high pressures, and no frictional contacts of the moving parts of the pamp Yet there is, it is claimed, no loss from ‘‘ slip,” as shown by careful weir and tank measurements. This positive character of the flow is perfectly sustained at a low rate of speed, and also at a very high rate, permitting the volume of discharge to be regulated at will. No noise is occasioned by the movement through the pump, and an air-chamber is not necessary. The perfect balance of all masses within the pump facili- tates a high rate of speed, aud lessens the wear, which being confined to outside jour- nals, with fuli bearings, is easily cared for. The pumps may be driven directly by the motor by pulley and belt, or through gear- ing. Toey can be made to readily establish their own suction without priming, and they work well against either bigh or low heads. They are particulariy adapied to the move- ment of large masses of water, where econ- omy and rapidity are desired. The pump is the inveation of Josiah Dow, of Caester, Pa. Messrs. Wetherill & Co. also build blowers and blowing engines on the same principle. a Flectrical Progress in Japan.—Mr. Fujioka, a Japanese engineer, recently gave some interesting particulars of the progress of electrical engineering in Japar, at a meet- ing of the National Electric Light Ass cia tion, in Philadelphia. The first Japanese telegraph line was put up in 1869, a Breguet A BC instrument being used, and since then Siemens Morse ink writers have been intro- duced. Most of the towns are now connected by telegraph under Govirnment control. Aerial lines are used with the excepton of a few subterranean cables. Some time since the question was raised in this country as to how far the introduc tion of water gas as a metallurgical fuel had progressed abroad So far as we know |the only locality where it was used, chiefly | for welding boiler tubes, was at Essen. | Since then it has been introduced for a | wider range for the purpose at the well | known works at Witkowitz, Austria. <A brief record of the experience gained since May, 1886, is given in the O5vsfr. Lanyer. | The princi al point of interest in connection } with the plant is that it was built to utilize } coke instead of anthracite, which has been usually employed in this country Che design of the Witkowitz plant does not in a yveneral way dither from that adopted jin Germany There are two producers with water-cooled rings, one producer’ from which the cinder is tipped in a liquid state, two coke scrubbers and one pipe condensor. There are four Cornish with each 120 sq.m. heating surface, fired or heated by producer gas, the pipe conducting the gas to the boilers being mm, in the clear. The steam produced is partly used for making water gas, but the greater quan- tity made is requiced for the rolling mill. In the engine hou-e there are two sets of double fans furnishing 500 c. m. of blast per bour running at a speed of 2c0o revolu tions. The engine driving them develops about 20 horse-power. <A cold-water pump b nlers, S00 capable of delivering 1'4 cubic feet of water per minute supplies water for cooling. ‘The gas holder bas a capacity of 1200 c. m. at a pressureof 120 mm., part of the gas being delivered into four scrubbers, from which the wa-hed gas is used for lighting the mills. After the pro- ducers have been started and the coke is hot, steam at a pressure of 300 mm. is blown through it, the making of gas and the heat ing of the producer alternating, the former requiring five minutes and the latter ten mipvutes. Every two hours the cinder is drawn, then the producer is filled up again and fired for fifteen minutes. Just after the cinder has been drawn, one producer will make 180 c. m. of gas in five minutes, while just previous to drawing the slag it runs down to t1o c. m Chis gas is very weil adapted for heating Siemens regenera- tive furnaces, but for raising the results have not been favorable, 12 to 14 ky. of steam being obtained from 1 sq. m. uf heating surface. These due to the construction of the boiler, is remarked generally that the gas 1s in reality too expensive for steam heating. The Witkow:tz plant is run with equal parts of small coke, 24 16 metric tons being put through in one day, producing 17,760 c. m of water gas.
