Vol. XXXIXs No.1 Early Surveying Lnstruments. Writing on the above subject to the Journal of the Engineering Society of Le high University, a correspondent says: The first surveying problem which would naturally present itsélf to a fixed commu nity, would be the dividing of its lands, and iixing beundaries ; for this would follow di rectly from the cultivation of the soil. This was especially the case in that part of Egypt subject to the overflow of the Nile. The water depositing sediment would of course gradually efface or cover upthe old bound ary marks, and it was, therefore, necessary to have these marks established in such a way thatthey might bereadily retraced. In Egypt, then, we may say, surveying had its origin; and from Egypt the Romans obtained their forms of surveying instruments. There were two principal problems which a sur- veyor of those days had to solve—he had to establish a basis, and then from this conduct his operations of dividing the land or running…
