The Navy Department has issued its circu lar giving tests for gun forgings and armor plate for the new vessels. There are 1221 tons of gun steel ordered, and open-hearth steel forgings of domestic manufacture are re- quired. Ingots must have an excess of weight of 40 per cent. above rough unbored forgings, and must be cast solid. The fol lowing are given as dimensions of finished diameters : Tubes and jackets, ( inches caliber to within 2 inches, of 8 inches cali ber to within 2'% inches, and of 10'4 inches caliber to within 3 inches. Tests are to be made at the expense of contractor, and will be directed to; he exhibition of all the prin cipal physical qualities of metal, particular attention being devoted to tensile strength, elasticity, extensibility and construction of area Tensile strength for 6, 8, ro and 12 inch calibers varies from 80,000 to 70,000 pounds ; of jackets, from 85,000 to 74,000 pounds ; elongation, from 22 to 12 per cent. ; tensile strength of hoops for all calibers, 100,000 to 90,000 pounds : trunnion bands, from 90,000 to 80,000 pounds ; elongation of hoops, 18 to 12 per cent.; elongation of trunnion bands, from 12 to 6 per cent. As toarmor plate the total weight required will probably not exceed 6¢ )O tons These plates must be of best quality of material, free from cracks, cavities, flaws, slags, sand spots, cinders, blowholes and seams, and must all possess effective ballistic resistance The boltholes in plates are to number 6500, The plates will undergo two chemical tests at the expense of the contractor, and will be tested for ballistic properties at the expense of the Government. They will be annea'ed, but not tempered, and the tensile strength must not fall below 82,coo pounds to the square inch. The wooden backing against which they must be bolted for test will be 36 inches thick. Near the middle of the plate will be arranged three points of proposed impact, so as to form an equilateral triangle. A steel projectile of best quality will be fired at each point. No projectile nor any fragment of plate must get wholly through the plate or back- ing. The plate must not break up or a piece be displaced so as to expose the back- ing before the impact of the third shot. Neither must large cracks which expose the backing appear before the third shot. Plates that show cracks within six months after being fastened to the ship must be replaced by contractor. Rolled armor plates for deflective decks have to show not less than 85,000 pounds tensile strength and 20 per cent. elongation. Gun shields must show not less than 95,000 pounds tensile strength and 15 per cent. elongation. EE A New Chicago Iron and Steel Ware- house. A new warehouse of ample proportions and special design has just been completed in Chicago for the joint occupancy of the Hartman Steel Company and the Apollo Iron and Steel Company. Mr. Nelson B. Williams, their Western agent, found this step necessary in order to provide for his increasing business, and was very fortunate in securing a most eligible and convenient location not far from the center of the city. It is situated on Halsted, Meagher and Six- teenth streets, between the tracks of the Wisconsin Central, Minnesota and North- western, ‘and Chicago and Great Western Railroads on one side, and those of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and Chicago and Northwestern on the other. All the other railroads having Chicago terminals connect with these railroads ; in the imme- diate vicinity being located the through transfer point for ali of them except the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul. Ground was broken on the last of November, and on the 1st of February goods began to be moved in. The dimensions of the building are 150 feet length and 100 feet width, comprising two stories and a basement. It is built of light-colored Chicago brick, with massive foundations and substantial walls, capable of supporting two or three additional stories, if their erection should be found desirable. In the basement are 79 brick piers sustain ing the floor above, each pier having an estimated crushing strength of 200 tons, Heavy wooden posts surmounting the piers sustain the upper floor and the roof, The basement and upper stories are floored with inch flooring on which is laid 2-inch plank. Such thorough precautions have been taken to secure strength and solidity that it is believed the building would endure many times the strain which it will be called upon to bear. Platforms will be built outside the ware- house and of the hight of a car floor, to en- CUMBERLAND NAIL AND IRON CO,, sites: scones’ sons ee MANUFACTURERS OF ~CUMBERLIND” NAILS & WROUGHT IRON PIPE, 43 North Water St., and 44 North Delaware Ave., PHILADELPHIA.
