In operating, the reservoir is filled with oil after having closed the valves G and H, the ecrew-cap F being removed. In order to obtain any de- sired feed the valves G and H are opened about alike, the former controlling the flow of oil through the pipe B B (Fig. 2) into the main steam pipe S, and the latter regulating the admission to the oil reservoir through the pipe A of water of condensation. The pipe A, we should add, communi- cates with the pipe C, which runs directly to the main steam-pipe. Steam from the main steam-pipe enters the pipe K (Fig. 1), corresponding to C in Fig. 2, and is condensed on its way to the lubricator. At the end of pipe A is arranged a brightly polished small metal plate F, showing very clearly the issuing drops of water, the cap E being for that purpose furnished with an opening which is closed by a glass plate. The latter, asthe cut shows, is held between two rubber packiog rings to prevent leakage. Dark or light oils may be used and the feed perfectly observed. For every drop of water entering the reservoir a drop of oil must necessarily issue from the right-hand end of the pipe B, the steam in the pipe S carrying it further to the cylinder of the engine. ‘The construction of the drain- cock D requires jittle explanation. A pack- ing disk is introduced to effect tight- nes:, ard the discharge is not direct. The eap F is lead seated and affords no chance for leakage. It is not difficult to see that cleaning of the lubricator pipes, which may be clogged up, can be effected in the easiest poss.ble way by blowing through steam, the left- hand end of the pipe B being curved up ward, and ending directly under the open- ing closed by the cap F, so that any accumu- lations may be blowu out into the air. We need scarcely add that the simplicity of the device, the absence of parts liable to dis- arrangement or breakage, and the positive action of the novel sight feed make a com- bination of highly interesting and valuable features. A New Straightway Valve. F. Lunkenbeimer, of the Cincinnati Brass Works, Cincinnati, Ohio, has just put on the market a simple, compact and reliable quick opening valve which will be found specially valuable for traction, hoisting and yacht engines, dredges, pumps, &c. In addition it is well adapted for water, oil and other fluids. In size it is no larger than an ordinary globe valve. Engraviugs representing general and sec- tional views are given on this pave. Briefly described, tbe valve is of the oscillating type. The valve chamber is made with two pipe connections in line with each other and is provided further with a lateral compart- ment into which tke valve swings in the act of opening. The valve itself is hung on the free end of a carrier attached to a spindle, which turns within a tubular portion of the shell, parallel with the axis of the pipe con- nections. Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse and vertical sections respectively. In these A represents the main chamber of the valve and B B’ the pipe connections communicat- ing with it. Projecting laterally from this chamber at an angle of about 60° is a neck, as seen in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, furni-hed with a screw cap, D, the removal of which affords convenient access to the interior of the main chamber; E represents the tubular ion of the casing to which we have re- evel d which occupies such a position between the connections B B’ and the neck as to insure a proper swinging of the valve without unduly increasing either the size or weight of the device. The main cham- ber, pipe connections and neck, as well as the portion F, are all a single casting. Ada to rock within the part E is the spindle F, the inner end of which, /, is journaled in a suitable bearing of tbe shell, while the outer end carries a handle, G. The spindle further has a collar, H, held down by packing in an ordinary stuf- fing box, as Fig. 4 shows. The square L carries one end of the rockiog arm M, the free end of the latter having a socket to receive the valve spindle proper, n, which jects centrally from the rear of the valve k This valve has a rim ground to fit snugly against the seat O, the Jatter being furnished with a diametrical rib, P, which serves asasupportforthe valve The spindle m bears against a screw, R, in the carrier M; this screw enables the valve to be adjusted so as to compensate for any wear occsioned either by use or regrind- ing. The free end of the carrier, moreover, bas a beveled shoulder, S, which when the carrier is swung around to close the valve ascends an inclined jection, T, of the shell, forcing the valve evenly and posi tively against its seat. This removal of the carrier can be accomplished in a few minutes. I have peculiar test-bars which give me the shrinkage to y,;, inch of the edge away from, and on side of, the gate of a % ioch square bar, and of a companion bar run with it 1 inch K \% ioch, and both 1 foot long. The ends run against a chill 12% inches opening, and the bars are meas ured in the chill in which they were cast to obtain shrink. I also get depth of chill and observe structure and much else, I have essen “*T hope I have succeeded in ordering a Swedish pig free from combined carbon, and comparatively free from silicon, phos- phorus and sulphur, and manganese, to use as a base. You may wonder why I do not resort to analysis, but I think the results will not be as satisfactory, and I do not wish to go to the expense if I can get the silicon pig necessary. Phosphorus, and sulphur, and manganese are easily added in known quan tities. For two years I have made my mixt- ure according to test results with the greatest success, and have found the same results that are mentioned by late experi- menters, and hope before long to have found out the exact meaning of the records I have obtained.” —— EE Mechanical Engineering at Home and Abroad. In a recent issue the London Engineer thus reflects on the variety in current en- gineering practices : So far as is known, says our contempo- rary, mechanical combinations care nothing about the country in which they are used, and, broadly speaking, that which is right in one country ought to be right in another. lt will be found, however, that this is ap- parently not the case. At all events, prac- tice in mechanical engineering varies all over the world, and this not only in small matters, but in things which may be re- garded, without putting much stress on the imagination, as fundamental. To what is the difference to be attributed! We think the answer must be that it is due, in large measure, though not altogether, to the personal proclivities, not of machines, but of the men who make them. If we turn to France, to say nothing of Germany or Austria, we find things not only tolerated, but much liked, which are abomi- nations to American and English engineers. Take, for example, the valve gear of a French locomotive. Even inits simplest form we have the eccentrics overhanging the cranks out- side. We have ourselves measured an en- gine in which the outside face of the outer eccentric was as nearly as possible 3 feet from the outside face of the engine frame. Such overhanging gear as this would be intwler- able on an English railway. Why should it be right at one side of the Channel and wrong at the other f Again, let us take boiler practice. On the Continent water tube boilers are freely used ; they are almost as popular as the Cornish boiler is with us. If a Frencbman does not make steam in a generator of the Rog or De Nayer type, then he will have elephant boilers. Of course boilers with ioterna! fur- naces may be seen in France and Germany, just as water-tube boilers may be seen in this country ; but the Lancashire boiler never found a congenial home on the Con- tinent, nor did the water-tube boiler in this country. Why is this? There is a great deal to be said in favor of both boilers Why do not both find favor in English and French eyes? In the United States they do things in boiler engineering which no one dreams of doing in this country, and no evil corse- quences follow. In Pennsylvania they have been making boilers 16 feet long and 5 feet in diameter of two sheets of steel }% inch thick. There are only two longitudinal seams; no cross seams. These boilers are fired externally under one end. The pro ducts of combustion are returned through 54 tubes. Boilers of this kind have long been kuown in the States and used with success. In this country the engineer whu proposes to use an externally fired boiler is looked upon as a Goth. If externally-fired boilers succeed in the United States, why do they not succeed in Great Britain? If they are failures in the United States, why do American engineers go on making them?
