The ordinary type of Harrison boiler, sd which it resembles in its main features, has en on the market for many years, and s therefore, we believe, sufficiently familiar | to steam users to make a detailed explana tion unnecessary. Briefly described, the boiler consists of a number of hollow spheres made of Bessemer metal, termed ‘‘ units,” each 8 inches in liameter and ,& inch thick, connected by curved necks 34% inches in diameter ; these are cast in two and tour unit sections, with opposite lateral openings to each sphere. The form of hollow spheres was adopted as combining the greatest strength with the createst heating surface, and this steam generator in its smallest form may be con- sidered as one of these spheres, having its opposite lateral openings closed by caps held in place by bolts. These uvits have ground rebate faces so perfectly made on special machinery that when pressed together into slabs by the heavy bolts which pass through their centers they make a perfect steam and water tight joint, iron to iron, without the aid of any kind of packing whatever. The bolts being surrounded by water cannot become overheated. A given number of slabs (practically complete boilers in them- selves) necessary to form the required horse- power are suspended in an inclised position side by side from an iron framework, and are joined at the extreme top and bottom by suitable connections forming steam and water couplings or passages. We find in a paper read before the Man chester (Eng.) Association of Engineers, by W. H. Bailey, an interesting account of the first iron boat, which, it would appear, was bu.lt at Cartmel, near Lancaster, England, by John Wilkinson, about the year 1750 John Wilkinson was in partnership with his brother and father, their chief business being in the manufacture of flat irons for smoothing linen. It is related that John’s fatber bought his iron in the molten state by the ladleful ; it was then carried across the high road to the small foumdry, and there run into these smoothing irons, The Wilkinsons prospered, business increased, for Jobn invented the box iron with its in side heating piece. They erected more extensive works in the neighborhood, en gaged themselves in smelting the rich hema tite ores, or what was then called ‘‘furness iron.” The furnaces were at Nelson House, near Lindal, in the Parish of Cartmel. They used the peat and turf of the district for fuel, and to get a proper supply of this to the furnace John Wilkinson desiyned a short canal which was cut through the turbary, and the iron boat was constructed, which created great astonishment along the whole country side. This first small iron boat at Cartmel was succeeded by others made by Wilkinson. Wilkinson had heavy contracts, and the boat builders were very busy supplying these new canals with boats ; but the arts of peace and the arts of war c reated a great demand for John Wilkinson’s manufacture. He obtained the contract for the Paris water works, which included all the pipes, tubes, cylinders and ironwork for that enormous undertaking, which was considered the greatest of its kind of that day. The next iron barge that was made was called the Trial, and according to the record of the day Wilkinson set to work building this at Willey, with John Jones as chief smith—John O’Lincoln he was called. The Trial was finished in 1787, and a great crowd came down to witness the launch of the iron barge,of which Wilkinson wrote ina letter dated Broseley, July 17th, 1787: ‘‘ Yes- terday week my iron boat was launched ; it answers all my expectations, and has convinced the unbelievers, who were 999 1n 1000, It will bea nine day’s wonder, and then be like Columbus’s egg.” Wilkinson went on building other barges. And yet this matériel is far from being irreproachable. During the war of Bohemia several field pieces burst. Cast-iron sleepers are expected to withstand a similar test up to 7 feet only.
