The Improved Ide Engine. Since the well-known Ide engine was first put on the market a few years ago several modifications of design have been effected, some of them entering only into engines specially so ordered, while others are of a more general character. From the engravings which we present on this page the nature of the more recent changes and the improvements will be read- ily understood. We need not refer in detail to | the main features of the engine as originally brought out, as our readers are undoubtedly sufficiently familiar with them. We will therefore only briefly point out that the steam-chest is cast on the lower side of the cylinder, and any water entering the cylin- der will pass out through the ports with the exhaust steam. It is bored out and fitted with a pair of cylinders or bushings, which have supporting bars across the ports to prevent any possibility of the packing rings or valve catching in the ports. The valve is of the hollow-piston type— | a hollow tube with a piston on each end provided with packing rings the same as the packing on main piston in cylinder. It is surrounded by steam which presses equally on each end, thus perfectly balancing the valve and relieving it from pressure or fric- tion, and insures the perfect working of the cut-off governor and close regulation. Fig. 3 of our engravings shows a section of a double admission-valve with very large ports, which, it is claimed, enables the en- gine to be run 50 per cent. above rate speed and power, giving the highest economy, with a steam-admission line on indicator cards equal to slow-speed Corliss-valve en- gines. Engines with this valve are not kept in stock by Messrs. Ide & Son, but are built to order when desired. The recess in the bottom of the steam-chest receivesany dirt or grit that may come over from the boiler. It also remains filled with oil, which insures constant lubrication of the pistons. If by any means the valve cylinders should be- come cut or worn they can be withdrawn and new ones inserted and a new valve put in place without delay at a small expense. A novelty of special interest will be found in the safety-caps or diaphragms shown in Figs 4 and 5. These are now fitted to all Ide engines, and are also appli- cable to other makes, avoiding all, possibility of cylinder frac- ture from the presence of entrained water or water of condensation. In the event of flooding or foaming of boilers, they will protect the engine from damage or breakaze by bursting, and allowimg the water to escape from cylinder. On engines below 80 horse- power the safety-caps can be placed on the indicator-pipes on the tops of the cylinders. Fig. 3 illustrates the safety- caps attached to the cylinder- cocks, and also pop-valves at- tached to indicator-pipes on top of cylinder, which are set to lift at 100 pounds pressure. In case of water the pops will lift and give warning in time to open the cylinder-cocks to pre- vent bursting of the safety- caps. In case of the bursting of a safety-cap it can be quickly replaced at a trifling expense The piston is a single casting, hollow, and as light as is con- sistent with strength. Ithasa long bearing in the cylinder, and is packed by two simple spring rings accurately fitted to the bore of cylinder. This kind of head and packing is simple and effective, and has beeu adopted by many of the best high-speed stationary and locomotive engine builders. Figs. 1 and 2 show rear and front views of an Ide engine furnished with an iron base, making the engine self-contained. The engines are so furnished in sizes up to 60 horse-power. As noted in our last issue, the builders, Messrs. A. L. Ide & Son, of Springfield, IIl., have turned over the right of manufacture of their engine to the Union Iron Works, of San Francisco, for the Pacific Coast, while the licensees for the Easteru and Southern States are the F. and M. Department of the Harrisburg Car Mfg. Company, of Harris- burg, Pa. _ — Unusaal Accumulations in Boilers. —The delay in fitting out the Brooklyn fora cruise on the Asiatic station is explained in reports from the commanding officer and chief engineer received at the Navy Depart- ment. According to the Nautical Gazette, their account of the condition of the boilers when the vessel returned to the Brooklyn Navy-Yard in May last, and of the work performed upon them since that date, shows that they were not in as good condition as reported when the vessel went into commis- sion in October, 1885. Many repairs were made and scale often removed during the eight months’ cruise, in spite of which, when the vessel arrived in New York, in May last, the boilers showed an unusually large accu- mulation of scale for so short a cruise. The cleaning resulted in the removal of 27,000 pounds of scale, to which is to be added 4500 pounds taken out at various time during the |cruise. The following rather unusual arti- cles to be found in a steam boiler were also |taken out: One working suit, one sledge, | four hand lamps, two chisel bars, two scal- of 1-inch pipe and elbow, three wooden wedges, two pieces of board and one wrench Some of these articles have been preserved | to show the thickness of the scale and to figure in the investigation likely to be mace. eee The Underground Wire Problem. Writing under this heading in the Fn- gineering News, Mr. S. S. Wheeler describes | some of the obstacles met with in the burying ing hammers, three flat chisels, one piece | it be air or a solid. This property is known as specific inductive capacity. Unfortu nately, the substances which transmit in duction the least are the poorest insulators. For example, rosin and pitch transmit only one-third as much induction as gutta-percha; but gutta-percha is a much more effective insulator than rosin or pitch. And in a general way it is the same with all sub- stances—the best insulators giving the most trouble from induction. The single ex ception to this rule is air, which is the best insulator known except when damp, and at the same time causes very little induction. Air transmits less induction than pitch or other solid insulator. These facts any Fig. 2.—Front View of Engine. RECENT IMPROVEMENTS IN of wires. One of the difficulties, says Mr. Wheeler, is leakage. This is overcome by good insulation. Bad insulation of a wire corresponds to the porosity of an earthern pipe, which has to convey a fluid a long dis- tance efficiently. Insulations are not abso- lute ; consequently, the longer the line or the greater the ro the better the in- sulation required, current before reaching the end of the line. The other difficulty is induction. This isa curious manifestation of clectrical action, by which the signals which are sent through a wire are more or less faintly reproduced in a neighboring wire, but this is not due at all to leakage, and there is no direct passage of current to or from either wire. It is sometimes popularly described as a sympa- thetic irritation. One of the most familiar instances of it is the buzzing heard in tele- phones. In other forms, under the names of retardation and interference, it is the chief obstacle to long distance telephoning | and ocean telegraphy. This trouble is very much increased in underground wires, be- cause they are necessarily very much closer together, the induction increasing inversely as the square of the distance between the wires. The induction is also increased by the presence of a good intervening insulator necessary to keep out water and prevent electrical leakage. As induction is in no way a leakage, it is not remedied by good insulation, but depends upon the power to transmit ind»ction of the substance lying between the wires, whether THE or the greater the loss of | IDE ENGINE, BUILT BY A. L. doubly augment the trouble caused by hav- ing wires bunched close together in a conduit. —_ Barrel-Shaped Cars. Mr. J. L. Ringwalt, in his series of arti- cles on ‘‘ Development of Transportation Systems in the United States,” published in the Railway World, says: Capt. John Grant, who was officially con- nected with the Pontchartrain Railroad, running out of New Orleans for a distance of 5% miles, which was opened in 1830 says that on that Jine the coaches were of every design and pattern, and the appearance of a train of cars was so unique that in compar- ison with a train of the present day it was ludicrous in the extreme. He added that one of the most remarkable of the early coaches was used on the Charleston and Hamburg. This car was in reality a mam- moth cistern laid on wheels. A door was cut in each end, and between the hoops were cut openings that served as windows. The seats were arranged longitudiaally inside the car, which, as it stood on the rails, was an object of great curiosity toCaptaiv Grant, familiar as he thought he was with every | form of railroad cars in use in those days. | The following reference to these novel cars | is made in the report of the South Carolina | IDE & ment, of ‘perhaps greater importance, and which has originated with ourselves, is the barrel car—constructed both for passengers and freight. These are made with staves grooved and dovetailed together, and sup | ported by six tron hoops 2 inches wide by 4 inch thick—doors at both ends. The pas- senger car is 30 feet long in the clear, with portico at the ends 2% feet Jong. The di- ameter in the center is 9 feet, and at the ends 8 feet. The staves are 14-inch boards 5 to 6 inches wide, extending the whole length of the car. There are 20 windows on each side, 15 x 30 inches, glazed, the sash passing up overhead. The freight car, Net Defenses Against Torpedoe: Important experiments with new net defense booms were recently carried out at Portsmouth, England, on board the ship Dido. Referring to these Jron says : The extreme difficulty of using the wooden booms in action having long been felt, a few years ago the matter engaged the attention of the authorities at Malta Dock yard, who fitted to the Superb the ordinary | booms, but added such appliances that the | time occupied in lowering the net was re- duced to one-fifth. Still the wooden booms were adhered to, and the result is that with which has been in use about four months, is Fig. 4.—Safety Bursting Cap Broken Fig. 3.—Sectional View of Double Admission SON, SPRINGFIELD ILL. only 21 feet long, but others are being con- structed 30 feet long, and will carry about 40 to 50 bales of cotton, or 15,000 pounds of | other goods.” I The difficulties attending the maintenance of an efficient lightship in some of the most | exposed positions are great, and at times | the service is a very arduous one to the men on board, yet any failure whatever is of very rare occurrence, and there is, we be- lieve, no instance on record of a light-vessel having ever been deserted by her crew dur- ing a storm. Collisions, which unfortu- nately are of frequent occurrence, are prob ably the greatest source of danger to these vessels and their crews. As it is a necessity | that light-vessels remain at their stations | with safety and efficiency as long as pos- | sible, usually seven years, they are generally built of wood, or are of composite construc- | tion, fastened and sheathed with Muntz metal. A few vessels have been built of | iron, but these are found at the end of one or two years to require removal from the | station, docking, and the external sub merged portions of the hull cleaned and | | painted. | Recent reports from Spain show increased commercial activity. The crops this year | have been good, especially of wheat. [ron | the exception of the Superb there is no vessel in the service that can run out her nets in less than two hours sy Mr. Bullivant’s system the work can be done in 10 minutes or a quarter of an hour. Several naval officers have often declared that, were they in action, they would totally disregard their net defenses, owing to their unwieldy work ing, and trust to their guns and helm. It was generally agreed by both the naval and dockyard professional officers who were present at the time that, although the in vention may be crude in some of its details, the principle is a thoroughly sound one. The cumbersome wooden spar weighs 11 ewt., while Mr. Bullivant’s spar, which is of the same length, and consists of a steel tube, weighs 5 cwt. Whether it is strong enough will have to be proved by tests at sea. Next, the wooden beams are made fast to the ship’s side by means of a hook which may at any time become unshipped. The newinvention is attached by a universal joint, by means of which the boom may be held in any conceivable position, but the most important feature of the boom is the traveler. Under the system at present in | vogue the nets are attached to the booms by men in boats told off for the purpose, and it can readily be conceived how impossible this task would be in action, while with the /nets already in position great difficulty is experienced in making the ship readily an- 'swer herhelm. In the Superb the nets are _made fast on board to the head of the booms, | and then thrown out to sea, thereby placing | a great strain on the spars. 7 The Bullivant system is simpler than either, The facility with which the trav- eler works;was exemplified dur- ing the trial in nearly a dozen ways, the nets being entirely submerged while the booms were run fore and aft, and also covered by water. In a second or two they were square with the ship and set taut, then the net was hauled in close to the ship, and the booms once more assumed @ perpendicular position In this way the net was brailed up, and in a very few minutes the booms and net were again ready for action. The impor tance of the invention is likely to be felt in another direction of no less weight. The Rus sians are reported to have dis- covered a torpedo which cuts the nets and explodes at the ship. It is so arranged as to burst only at the second object it touches. Now, with the wooden booms, the placing of the two nets is such a tedious process as to be for all useful purposes impracticable. With the Bullivant boom it can easily be done, and would therefore be a protection against the new torpedo. Such are the merits of the invention, but in the opinion of men best able eR SES <seenetsenenesSnsunensnssssnensestnnsunne Valve. to judge it is by no means per-* fect. It was thought, in the first place, to be too frail both in the boom and in the joint, also that the brails and leads would require a further exercise of the ingenuity of the inventor. There are other minor details which demand improve |}ment, but as to the general principle |there was a unanimous opinion that it was the right one. It was also pointed out that in estimating the weight and bulk of spare spars in a ship the new invention was one to be commended, for not only is it ligher, but it can be made in two parts and joined in the middle by means of ascrew. Itis also cheaper than the wooden spars, and being so much lighter the distance of 45 feet now observed be- tween the booms on the side of a man-of war can be reduced to 30 feet, thereby im posing less strain and securing the tautness ot the net. The experiments being con sidered a success, the booms will now be tried at sea on one of the ships about to be | commissioned. cm An Interesting Monument.—A commu nication has been made to the French Acad- emy of Inscriptions and Belles- Lettres rela tive to a discovery made by M.
