We reproduce on this page, and also on page 7, engravings from Les Annales Indus- elles, representing a high-speed automatic engine designed by Mr. Proell, of Dresden, Saxony. The engine possesses a number of interesting features which are very well shown in the illustrations, and hence require little explanation. The valve T is of the rotary type worked by the hollow eccentric-rod D. The valve is slightly conical, and is arranged beneath the cylinder. The manner of lubrication is plainly shown. Steam enters at one end, I, Fig. 4, and isled alternately to the two cylin- derends. The exhaust passes through the portE, The main shaft carries two fly-wheels, one of them, V, being of ordinary form, while the other, V’, is much heavier and carries a circular governor box. The governor is of special design, an enlarged view being given in Fig. 5. The two weights P P on the arms p p, Moving outward under the influence of centrifugal force, turn the two spindles w w which pass through the pulley arms. The | | coils of the compensating spring are so arranged that breakage will not seriously affect the running of the engine. The eccentric C, as will be noticed from Fig. 3, turns on a second eccentric, G, mounted on the main shaft. The engine is designed to run at a speed of 180 revolutions per minute. The diam- eter of cylinder is 200 mm. (about 8 inches), the stroke being 400 mm. (16 inches). i Making Pig Iron in New England. A correspondent of Bradstreet’s discusses the question of manufacturing pig iron in New England. He says: ‘*T have specially investigated the mineral resources of the State of Rhode Island and the opportunity there existing to bring to gether in furnaces, to be located on Narra- gansett Bay, her iron ores, coal and lime- stone.
