We show in the engravings on this page -eneral and sectional views of an automatic cut-off engine built by the Webster, Camp & Lane Machine Co., of Akron, Ohio. The engine is novel in many respects and em- bodies a number of features justly entitled to attention. It was designed for an av- erage piston speed of 500 feet per minute, and has @ length of stroke twice the diam- eter of the cylinder. The valves are of the eridiron pattern, giving a large area of opening with a very short travel. The yalve seats are easily accessible for examina- tion, and, when worn sufficiently to require planing, the steam-chests can be easily re- moved without disturbing the cylinder.
