This is a most valuable ad- vantage. The changes in the size of the product can be made in. a few minutes, and while the crusher is actually running and breaking stone. The stroke of the jaw can be adjusted to be more or less at either the upper or the lower ends, or it can have the same amount of stroke throughout. The crushing action can be varied in every case to suit the kind of rock to be crushed and the required size and degree of uniformity of the product. After making a stroke the lower end of the receiver rests open, so as to allow the crushed material time to escape, while the impact of the jaw against the cam, as its return motion is arrested, jars the broken rock down and hurries it through | bearings. These springs, while ing the adjusting wedge L. > The angle of the toggle J may be changed the discharge opening. This discharging action greatly increases the effectiveness of this machine, and makes it possible, it is claimed, to take advantage of a short stroke at the lower end of the jaw, combined with high speed; without reducing the capacity of the machine. The intermittent crushing action possessed by the machine is said to be always in the nature of a hammer blew, even when at the least amount, so that the machine will not clog or choke in working soft or wet rock or fine sizes. As the crushing capacity of the machines can be varied to any desired extent relavively to the discharging capacity, the material can be held under the action of the jaws for a shorter or longer time, ac- cording as it is desired to simply break or to crush it. The forward toggle is made with a transverse hole through its center, and is proportioned so as to break under any undue or extraordinary strain, thus insuring against the serious break-downs that so often occur and are so difficult to guard inst in working crushers, arising from the carelessness of men in allowing pieces of iron or steel, such as sledge hammers, bars, drill points, &c., to get into the ma- chine. This safety device is inexpensive and can be quickly replaced. The frame, which is cast in one piece, is extended across the top and bottom so as to firmly support the working jaws and the crank- shaft. This construction makes it practica. ble to build these machines of any required size, so that rock can be dumped into them instead of having to be fed laboriously by hand. The placing of the crank-shaft on the lower side of the frame, combined witb the balanced and continuous crushing prc duced by the two or more jaws working side by side alternately, give the machine great stability, so that it runs without shaking o1 jarring the foundation or building. The crank-shaft runs in a bath of oil, kept always to the proper level by a supply-pipe, and all overflow and drip can be saved ana used over again. The main journal boxes are of specially prepared composition meta! and are-interchangeable. A new set can be put in in a few minutes by simply raising: the shaft and fly-wheels in place. A sectional view is shown in Fig. 1. The fixed crushing plates are shown at B. They are reversible, readily taken out and put in place and securely fastened. The hinged crushing plates C are also reversible, so that the wear can be equalized. They are se- curely hinged to the swinging jaws D by means of a curved recess and projection and the hook-bolt d, engaging a transverse pin cast in the plate. The hook-bolt d is pro- vided with a rubber washer or cushion, c, which allows the fixed and hinged crushing lates to be worked close together at thei: ower ends with safety, as the hinged plate can rock slightly on the point of the jaw D if it should strike the fixed plate. The shaft- of the swinging jaw have steel bushings easily replaced when worn. The jaw-shaft is of steel, and besides having long bearings in the sides of the frame is further strength- ‘ened and firmly heid in place by the U-bolts e, holding it securely in intermediate bear ings cast fast to the top of the frame at the center of each jaw. The cam F, which has a renewable wear ing surface, is fitted to revolve easily on it- shaft G, but is held in place by the dog f/f, the tail of which engages a rubber ring fitted in a recess inthe cam. This slightly flexible fastening allows the shaft and cams to be revolved, even while the machine is working, by means of the hand-wheel and worm gear sh.wn in the outside view. The cam can be set separately, so as to com- pensate for any difference in thickness or wear of the crushing plates. The machine being in operation, the stroke of the lowe: ends of the crushing plates can be cut off tu any desired proportion of the stroke of the swinging jaw D by adjusting the position of the cams, which are held in place by the worm gear until a new adjustment is desired. The lower ends of the crushing plates rest against the cams during the time their stroke is cut off, tbus greatly facilitating the dis- charge of the crushed material. This adjustment, in connection with the cams and the wedge L, gives complete control of the crusbing action, which can therefore be varied to suit any kind of material and the size and quality of the preduct required. The adjusting wedge L is extended down- ward so as to maintain, in connection with the lever N, the jaw springs at the proper tension, no matter how much the wedge is raised or lowered. The nut / is flanged and provided with a locking-pin. As the position of the wedge L controls the position of the motion of the jaw D, as well as the forward reach of the crushing-plate C, it will be seen that when the cams are once adjusted so that the discharge opening is of the desired width the amount of stroke of the lower end of the crushing-plate can be regulated with the utmost nicety by raising or lower- ing the wedge L, while the size of the prod- uct allowed to be discharged can be con- trolled by the hand-wheel and cams. When the adjustment for size of product and amount of stroke are once made no new adjustment of the cams is necessary, except for wear of the crushing-plates, and no new Interchangeable boxes, W, are supplied for the crank-shaft bearings. Ono the contrary, it is in many regards an encouragement to it. Many employers of labor prefer to deal with or ganized labor. They perceive the abuses to which it is liable, but they believe the remedy is not in opposing organization, but in rendering it more complete, intelligent and responsible. In its present stage it exposes them to some serious disturbances and uncertainties, but it removes others more serious, and it may be perfected, while it certainly cannot be abolished. But labor organizations that encourage or sanction violence and lawlessness are enemies to workingmen, because they tend to lessen their chances for profitable employment And this is the gravest possible injury. The last census of the United States showed that in round numbers $2,800,000,000 of capital in manufactures gave employment to 2,600, ooo men, women and children, so that every $100,000 in capital insured the employment of nearly 100 persons. They should be the first to oppose it and the most resolute in putting it down.” EE The Great Charcoal Iron Region ot the South. No railroad in the United States, unless it be one in the Hanging Rock region, has so many charcoal iron furnaces on its line as the Alabama Division of the East Tennes see, Virginia and Georgia. Bounded on either side for its entire length by hills and moun- tains containing large beds of limonite, and which were also covered with thousands of square miles of unbroken forests of pine aud oak, the advantages of the country on its line was easily apparent to any observer, however casual. It can safely be said that there is not in a breadth of 2 miles on each side of the road a single mile in length which has not more or less iron ore, while at very many points the beds are very extensive. The formation in which this ore occurs is the lower silurian, and the.e are usually de- pusits near the junction of the metamorphic shales or Potsdam sandstone and the Quebec dolomite. Below Calerathere are deposits at the junction of the Quebec dolomite, calcif- erous sandstone and the coal measures, the former in that region being brought up in immediate contact with the sandstones of the coal measures by the action of a great fault. So different as they are in their geo- logical location, so great is the difference in their genesis. In my opinion, derived from long observation of the limonite de- posits of Western Kentucky and Tennessee and of Alabama, the limonites northeast of Calera, in contact with or near the Potsdam sandstones are the result of the decom- position of siliceous limestones containing iron, and also the result of the decomposition of iron pyrites. Those southwest of Calera are the result of the gradual decomposition of a ferruginous sand-tone in contact with limestone more or less siliceous, which ferruginous sandstone is a part of the coal measure strata immediately adjacent, and still exists at many points. This last opinion is the same advanced by David Dale Owen in one of his volumes on *‘ Kentucky Geology,” but I had formed the theory before | was gratified by finding that I was sustained by so high an authority. He applied it to the West Kentucky iron belt, and I had formed the theory from observations on what is called the ‘‘ Western iron belt of Tennessee,” both of which are upon the remnants of a coal field that has been slowly eroded, the sub-carboniferous limestones only being left except on some unusually high hills where the ferrugipous sandstone may yet be found iu scattered patches. I have stated that some of these deposits are very large. The proof can easily be had by visiting Tecumseh, Wocdstock or Shelby furnaces, each of which have derived their supply for the manufacture of over 40 tons of pig per day from almost a single bed for from 12 to 18 years, and still draw ore from the same in almost, if not quite, undimin ished quantity. The Salisbury (Conn.) ores are in the same formation, and every iron man knows the great amount of iron that has been made from them. Such are the ores. As stated, the timber supply is equally great, but, of course, spread uver a greater area. A 50-ton furnace may get its supply of ore for 25 years from one ore bank a haif mile from its stockhouse, but during that time, at the best work, would have cut the wood from 25,000 acresin a small fraction of 40 square miles, and if located immediately in the center of its forest area would have to draw its coal a little over 6 milesin each direction. This at a glance seems to entail an enormcus cost, and it would if the old system of wagon haulage alone was still in use, but now all the furnaces have, more or less, tramrosads or narrow- gauge railroads running out into the large areas of forest, some of them so constructed that they can be taken from one locality when the wood is exhausted there and moved to another where the forest is un touched. With such a system of operations the cost of charcoal has been little, if at all, increased over that when the coaling grounds were within a mile or two of the furnace and wagons were depended upon for transporting the coal. Some of the fur- naces also draw large quantities of coal from places un the line of the Eastern Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia, a considerable distance from them. Taking these points into view it may be assumed that the charcoal fur naces of this region are not likely for many years to be furced to stop operations or change to coke on account of the impossibil- ity of obtaiming charcoal at a price whereby they can make iron at reasonable cost. But they are in that time exhausting a timber supply—the yellow pine—wh cb is or will be far more valuable for lumber than for char coal. It is folly to say that it cannot be exhausted.
