The present design is the outgrowth of much careful study and wide experience accumulated on the part of Messrs. Davis & Colby, and the record of its work at Katahdin and at Port Leyden, N. Y. Messrs. Pancoast & Rogers, of this city, sole agents for the patentees, describe its construction as follows : The Davis—Colby roaster consists of two circular walls, one within the other. In the outer wall are built 16 fire-arches for the in- gress of gas and air, and as many working doors for access to the ore. At the bottom are eight doors for withdrawing the ore when roasted.
