Often three charges are worked in an hour. Fif- teen in 10 hours is attained, and the aim is to reach 20. When it drops to 0.6 or 0.7 per cent. the wear is less, but then the cinder is not suf ficiently fluid and the oxide from the fet tling is not entirely scorified, and makes the working of the product difficult. It is held by the manager that the most favorable per- centage of silica in the cinder is about 25 percent. The melting furnace is charged every evening with 30,000 pounds of pig, which is melted in time in the morning to begin work, At every cast 1500 to 2000 pounds are withdrawn and a corresponding quantity of pig charged. An Investigation into the Comparative Merits of Iron and Steel Beams. One of the most exhaustive investiga- tions into the comparative merits of iron and steel has been recently carried out by Prof. L. Tetmayer, of the Polytechnic School at Zurich, Switzerland, for the firm | of Gebrueder Stumm, of the Neunkirchen Iron Works, near Saarbruecken, Germany. i So ee m wrought-iron and basic-steel beams of the standard section of the German State Rail- ways, and it possesses direct interest in this country, because the general question is one much debated since the introduction of steel beams by the Carnegies, of Pittsburgh, and since the North Chicago Rolling Mill Co. are credited with into the same business. The wrought iron used at the Stumm Works is made from white and mottled minette pig, to which | some pig higher in manganese and lower in phosphorus is added, comparative prices at ‘the present time favoring the use of Siegen MESSRS. In asimilar way bending tests wore made with specimens heated to redness. Then followed a series of welding tests and a se ries of hardening tests, made by heating. plunging into cold water and testing, and finally a series of bending tests on full sized beams, and drop tests. In conclusion, Pro- fessor Tetmajer endeavored to ascertain the effect of punching and drilling The following is the result of the tests of the material, the average of 30 specimens in each case : TESTS FOR TENSILE STRENGTH Steel Iron Flange Web Flange. From the tests of entire samples of the beams, Professor Tetmajer concludes that basic steel beams resist shocks with as much safety as wrought-iron beams, and that minor accidental flaws do not subject a structure to greater danger when steel is used than wheniron is employed. We may state here incidentally that Professor Tetmajer madea number of tests on beams of both materials which had been purposely slightly damaged. In regard to punching, he reaches the con- clusion that the tensile strength of the steel is reduced by 30 per cent., which is, how- ever, restored by annealing and reaming. Plates are appended to the pamphlet, illus- trating the effect of the drop tests on the iron and the steel beams. The latter cer- tainly exhibit their ability to stand fully as much torture. The matter is one which has been very ably carried through, reflecting great credit, both upon the investigator and the manufacturerer. Unmagnetizable Steel, Also Woodbridge Clay Mining Co,’s Fire Brick. Mr J. T. Buttomley has made some ex- periments with a piece of steel which was almost unmagnetizable. The steel was made by Messrs. Moses Eadon & Sons, of Sheffield, under Hadfield’s patent, and contains 15 per cent. of manganese. One side of the speci- men has been polished and shows that the steel is capable of taking a very high finish. The present specimen has a tensile strength of 45 tons to the square inch. To test it magnetically, the bar was first ‘‘ touched” with steel magnets, but these had evidently no effect upon it. It was then placed be- tween the poles of a powerful, Ruhmkorff electro-magnet excited by 40 large tray Daniell ceils arranged in fours for quantity and 10 in series. The bar was, however, still unaffected by the magnetism, sc far as co :ld be perceived by the hand. On testing it by a delieate magnetomet
