The thbory of the process is as follows: The lime contained in the pores of the plaster decomposes the sulphate, with production of two insoluble bodies, to wit, sulphate of lime and oxide, which fill the pores of the object submitted to the treatment in question. With sul phate of zinc the object keeps of a white color, but with sulphate of iron the object, at first greenish, takes on drying and with lapse of time the color of the sesquiox ide of iron. With sulphate of iron the hard est surfaces are obtained, the resistance of rupture being 20 times greater than with ordinary plaster. To obtain the maximum hardness aud tenacity it is necessary that the object should first be very dry and steeped in a solution which is practically saturated. The first immersion of the object in the solution ought not to last over two hours, as a too-long immersion at first is apt to render the surface friable. On drying the plaster object afresh after the first im- mersion there is no further fear of its be coming friable. If the proportion of slaked lime is too great the surface is apt to take a very hard marble-like skin, which prevents the hardening of the inner portions of the object. The proportion of 1 of lime to 6 of plaster, as stated above, has given the best results. Dr. Percy, in his address from the chair the last meeting of the British Iron and Steel Institute, refers in the following man- [ner to the mooted question of crystalline structure in iron So recently as February last it was an inounced that Mr. John Collet, State Geolo gist of Indiana, had found that the malleable bar iron used in the construction of several railway bridges in America, and which, it is asserted, was of the best quality, had aquired a crystalline structure, and in some places to such an extent as tothreaten disaster at any time. This alleged change of structure was attributed to the continued and repeated vi- bration caused by the passage of heavy trains. It is an old and still prevalent opinion among engineers that malleable iron may by long exposure to vibratory or concussive action, as, for example, under such conditions as [ have just mentioned, ac- quire what it did not pre- viously possess, namely, a crystalline structure. Now, I venture to question the correctness of that opinion. There may conclusive evidence in support of it; but, if so, it has escaped my attention, though I have long been in quest of it. What has been demon- strated is that malleable iron by exposure to vibra- tory or concussive action becomes harder and more easily frangible, so that a blow which, before such exposure, would not break a bar of iron, might easily break it afterward. But, when even the most fibrous iron is broken with extreme rapidity, as it may be by the impact of a cannon shot, and as I have often seen, its fracture is always crystailine, and as dis- tinctly and largely so as that of similar iron broken by a sledge hammer after having been subjected to the necessary degree of vibratory or concussive ac- tion. It may possibly be suggested that a crystalline structure may be instanta- neously developed in the one case as well as slowly in the other, just as a supersaturated solution of sulphate of soda may be instantaneously changed into a crystalline mass by a touch, and an ordinary hot, saturated solution of the same salt gradually changed into a crystalline mass by slow cooling. It at be should, hewever, be ob served that the crystals formed under these two conditions differ widely in character from each other. W hen rapidly produced they are small and confused, and, in the opposite case, | large and well defined.
