The Fife Pier stands between high and low water mark, and is separated by a span of 1700 feet from the Inch Garvie Pier, which is partly founded upon a rocky island in mid-stream. other span of 1700 feet carries the bridge to the Queensferry Pier, which is at the edge ; yf the deep channel. The total length of the viaduct is about 1% miles, and includes two spans of 1700 feet, two of 675 feet, the shoreward halves of the outer canti- levers, fifteen of 168 feet and five of 25 feet. Including piers, there is thus almost exactly 1 mile covered by four main spans, and % mile of viaduct approach. The clear head- way under the center of the bridge is 150 feet above high water, and the highest point of the bridge is 360 feet above the same datum. The con- tract was let on De- cember 21, 1882, for £1,600,000, and work was commenced in the following month. Each of the main piers comprises four columns carried down to the rock on the boulder clay. Three of the Fife columns are completed, and the remaining one is in progress ; at Inch Gar- vie one pier is com- plete, one is in prog- ress, while at Queens- ferry the work on the caissons is advanced. All the pneumatic cais- sons will be filled with concrete up to low- water mark of a mix- ture having a crush- ing strength of 50 tons per square foot. Above low water the cylin- drical piers, which are 49 feet in diameter at the top, 55 feet at the bottom ‘and 36 feet high, consist of the strongest masonry, the hearting being flat- bedded Arbroath stone and the facing Aber- deen granite. Ineach cylindrical pier there are 48 steel bolts, 1% inches in diameter and 24 feet long, to hold down the bedplate and saperstructure of the main spans. One of the Fife piers was built by aid of a timber and clay coffer-dam, and one by means of a half- tide dam. At Inch Garvie much of the work of the shallow piers had to be done at low tide under great difficulties. The Queensferry Pier co.sists of a group of four cylindrical cais- sons 70 feet in diame- ter at the bottom edge. Owing t» the special conditions of the site, the work differs in some respects from ordinary pneumatic cais- sons. The bed of the Forth at the Queens- ferry Pier is of very soft mud for a depth of from 20 feet to 35 feet, when the boulder clay is reached, the surface of both the mud and the clay falling sharply toward the 200- feet-deep channel between Queensferry and Inch Garvie. The caissons had to be floated out and sunk about 4% mile from shore in an exposed seaway. To facilitate operations the caissons have double skins, 7 feet 6 inches apart, and vertical bulkheads be- tween the skins, By filling the space be- tween the skins with concrete to varying hights, the irregularity in the level of the| bottom and the hardness of the mud could be to some extent compensated for, as the weight brought upon the cutting edge of the caisson could be regulated as desired. Iron being very cheap, a liberal use was made of t in cunjunction with concrete where ma- soury or brickwork might have been em- ployed. Strong lattice girders and cross girders stiffen to the required extent the roof of the working chamber. These gird- ers are subject to a heavy bending stress up ward and downward, owing to the tide, the range of which is about 20 feet. Thus, if sufficient concrete were filled over the roof to balance the air pressure at mean-tide level, then at high water the excess of air pressure unbalanced by the weight of con- crete would obviously be that due to the half-tide difference of hight, and at low water, similarly, the excess of weight of concrete would be of the same amount. There would thus be a force of more than 1100 tons tending to bend the girders down- ward at low water and upward at high water. An- | | Two shafts, 3 feet 6 inches in diameter, with air-locks for passing out the excava- |} tion, and one shaft with double air-lock for |the men, are provided, together with ejector- | pipes for the mud, water-pipes, supply-pipes |for the concrete and other conveniences. The former locks are of somewhat special }construction and have worked extremely well in practice. The lock proper forms a simple continuation of the shafts, and there are two sliding doors placed horizontally, with sufficient space between them for the skip of excavated clay or boulders. An in ternal drum fixed on one side of the lock is driven by an external pair of engines fixed to another side of the lock, the shaft passing through a stuffing-box. A pair of smail hydraulic rams work the sliding doors, hand gear being also provided, though never worked, and interlocking arrangements analogous to those used with railway sig- nals, making it impossible for both doors to be operated together. When a skip has been filled below, a signal by air whistle is given, and the engine man on top of the caisson starts the winding engine. Some people seem imbued with ‘an idea that anything said in praise of either American or of foreign | workmanship involves an unpatriotic dis tinction of what we produce at home. This is a very narrow view of things, for, with- out having any sympathy with that cosmo- politan philanthropy which exalts every country at the expense of our own, it is plain that we can never indulge a generous ambition, nor aspire to liead the van of progress, if we shut our eyes willfully to what goes on in the world around. There are no countries from which we can more fairly take example than those whose original inhabitants came from this. America has been peopled by the more energetic of our own race, who now possess a country of marvellous internal resoures. By the help of their laws, and to their enormous gain, new inventions are eagerly sought after, and talent meets great encouragement. There a man does not need to labor for many years in perfecting an invention, taking the doubt- ful protection of those statutes of limitation called our patent laws, only at last to find his ideas appropriated by another. | $4.50 a Year, Including DLostage. Single Coptes, Zen Cents. Emery-Wheels and Emery-Wheel Machinery.* BY W. O. ROPER. Emery is corundum carrying some oxide of iron and silica; corundum itself is alu- mina. Sapphire and ruby are corundum in its purest form, slightly tinged with iron oxide. In a less pure state corundum is found in many places, and is then valuable only for commercial purposes. The emery beds of most importance are those situated in Turkey and Asia Minor; considerable quantities of emery are found near Smyrna and Ephesus. The material takes its name from Cape Emeri, a promontory in the Isle of Naxos, where there are considerable de- posits. In 1871 large beds of corundum were discovered in North Carolina, their existence having been betokened by the presence of numerous water-worn pebbles in the beds of the adjacent rivers. These beds have been worked commercially, and the corundum extracted, crushed and used for grinding and polishing. Emery is obtained in the East from surface workings, and the presence of the emery is generally indicated by the dark red color of the ground above it. The strike steel rods sharp- ly into the ground where they expect the existence of emery, and by examining the points of the rods can easily detect its pres ence. The mineral is broken up ioto lumps weighing about 1 cwt each. If hard to break, a fire is lighted around the refractory lump, and on cooling blows are resorted to again. The lumps are then carried to the coast by railway or on mule- back, and the material! reaches England chief- ly as ballast; thus freight is an insigniti- cant item in the cost The Turkish and Greek Governments gener- ally let the right to raise and dispose of the emery to English capitalists, The specific gravity of emery ranges from 2.75 to 4.28 and the color from dark gray to black; there is an impure variety of co- rundum blue-gray to brown in color. Much of the commercial em ery is artificially col- ored, and is often mixed to a small ex- tent with ground-iron slag; some buyers in- sist upon the adultera prospectors tion. Analysis of em- ery shows that it is composed of from 60 to 80 per cent. of alumina, 5 to 33 per cent. of iron oxide, to gether with a small quantity of,lime, water and silica. Cor- undum, on the other hand, although break ing into pieces with many sharp points, ex hibits also plain and curved surfaces. It is owing to this that corundum is not more ex tensively employed in the manufacture of grinding-wheels. Thus emery will cut its way into the material operated on, while corundum will grind and tear, and only per form the work in consequence of its beiny of a harder nature The next point to consider is the prepara tion of emery on its arrival in England. It is first treated in the emery mills. Stone crushers reduce the large lumps to pieces about the size of a hen’s egg, and these im turn are reduced in a stamp mill or are ground in a horizontal revolving mill with cast-iron circular grinding plates. Naturally the life of these plates is not long, and fre quent renewals are necessary. The frag ments of emery are then passed. between chilled cast-iron rolls and ground or crushed again, then sifted through sieves During these operations a portion of the emery is separated from the lumps in the form of dust, which collects on the top of beams and other places. CAMBRIA LINK BARB WIRE, We call attention to the following points of superiority in this form of Wire Fence over all others : Ist. It isa perfect chain with barbs, which is the correct principle for a Fence Wire. 2d. lt can be stretched by hand to a perfectly straight line, and does not require to have the life pulled out of it by stretch- ers or crowbars to get it straight and free from kinks. 3d. Two strands of wire cannot be so twisted together as to give double the tensile strength of one. The Link Barb Wire is equal to any in strength. 4th. It is the easiest and quickest to erect and the handsomest. 5th. Note that the Barb is made of same size Wire as the strand, not a smaller size. 6th. None but the very highest quality of Strand Wire will stand all the bending and twisting necessary to form the Link. Common Fence Wire is not strong enough. 7th. It is as light as any good two-point Barb. 8th. A gate can be formed at any post by merely bracing the post, carrying to next post and hanging it on hooks.
