A An Electric-Motor Consolidation. According to the World, a meeting has been held in this city of the representatives of the companies interested in the introduc- tion of electric motors. Among those who were present were Cyrus W. Field, David Dudley Field, Dr. Henry Field, Col. F. K. Hain, general manager of the Manhattan Railway Company; Stephen D. Field, the electrician ; the Messrs. Hawkesworth, rep resenting the Daft electric motor: Mr. Cos ter, of Drexel, Morgan & Co., who are in- terested in the Edison inventions ; Colonel Hazard, of the Brush Light Company, and Charles Hoeltzer, who represents the inter- ests of the Siemens Brothers in the United States, and Messrs. E. N. Dickerson, senior and junior. One of the parties in the above-described consolidation, the Daft Electric Light Com pany, has obtained permission to make an experiment with an electric motor on the tracks of the Brooklyn Bridge Railway. The company is to furnish the motor and pay all the expenses incident to the trial, which is to be made under the direction of the bridge authorities. It will be made in the night, between 1 and 4 o’clock, when there are no trains running, so that it can by no pos sibility interfere with travel on the bridge. It will be about two months before the motor will be ready for the experiment. The Daft Electric Light Company has already spent $10,000 in preparing for it. - II Western Estimates of Cost of Pig. The Cleveland Trade Review is of the opinion that Cleveland possesses superior ad vantages for the manufacture of pig iron from Lake Superior ore. A recent issue of that journal contains the following interest ing editorial article : ‘* Several estimates of the cost of making Eatered at The Iron Ag and the Post Office, New York, as New York, Thursday. Market prices are the true basis of wages, says the Philadelphia North American, and those prices are chiefly regulated by the law of supply and demand. Were men to lay their heads together and agree upon the proportionate relation of labor to the value of the product, it seems to us that strikes would finally disappear, together with the formidable distemper they create and leave in their track. Yet such an agreement would be based on the condition that an advance in market prices should carry with itan advance in wages. Many of our industries are carried on with this un derstanding already. It is the correct thing, and, having justice at the bottom, it gives satisfaction to the majority. Good prices mean good wages, and both taken together mean good times. There can be no good times unless wages follow market prices, and when they do this they will be found to maintain a practically unvarying proportion to the value of the products, and the earn ings of the plant will follow the same law. a Preserving Railway Sleepers.—At the Technical Convention of the German Rail- way Union, last July, areport on preserved sleepers was presented, which was sup- plementary to a previous report published some years ago. Of the railways answering the circular of inquiry sent out by the com- REVERSING RAIL-MILL ENGINES, might be agreed upon by the general com- pany to be formed. Such a consolidation, it was thought, would secure the very best system of electric railroading. At the same time it was urged that dangerous competi- tion, which would destroy all the profits of the individual companies, would in this man- ner be prevented. It was eventually decided to form a stock company with a capital of $1.000,000. Half | of this sum is to be paid in cash. The interests of the patents of the inventors are to be con- sidered, temporarily at least, as the equiva- lent of the remainder of the capital. The company reserves the privilege of paying the whole of this sum to the individual concern | which proves successful in the trial of electric motors, or it may if it pleases divide the stock among the sub-companies in such | proportion as may be deemed advisable. It | was also resolved that an expert commission should be appointed to witness the trials of the different electric motors and render judgment as to which system would prove most practicable. The commission selected is composed of the following well-known scientists and railroad managers: Prof. Sir William Thompson, LL. D., F.R.S., of Glasgow University; George B. Roberts, president of the Pennsylvania Railroad Com- pany; John H. Rutter, president of the New York Central and Hudson River Rail- road ; Robert Harris, president of the North- ern Pacific Railroad, and Charles R. Cross, professor of physics in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at Boston. This commission will meet at an early date. We believe Cleveland is the best point in the country for the manufacture of iron from Lake Superior ores, other things being equal, but there is force in the point made in favor of New Castle—i. e., that the cost of ground for the plant, together with the lower taxes, renders that a most advan- tageous point for the location of a modern blast furnace—when the manufacture of iro n shall become remunerative. We have no interest whatever in that city, know of no project to ‘ float’ a blast-furnace scheme there, and only speak from geographical considerations. That is the case with pig iron and with some of the textile fabrics largely produced in this country. It must be plain to nearly all that men will not create a costly plant for any purpose unless they see some prospect of earning more than sufficient to maintain the plant in good order. The man who saves enough out of his earnings to purchase a labor-saving machine does not expect to run the machine without some profit. And if he finds that after he has paid the wages of a machine-tender, and all the cost of running the machine itself, the product will not sell for enough to reimburse him that outlay, he will probably call a halt. Should there be no demand for the product, he wil) probably think twice ere he locks up any more of his floating capital in goods that will not sell. What is to be done in a case like that ? Such a producer can either stop producing, or look about for some means to produce at smaller cost. The first plan involves closing the doors and the discharge of the operatives. The second plan suggests an agreement between the employer and the employed in which both recognize the na- ture of the situation. rhat is to say, both may agree that it is better to produceat a smaller cost until the demand quickens prices than it would be to come to a dead halt. That involves wage reduction. But wage reduction in such a case does not involve an increase of income to the wage payer. It may, and sometimes does, in six to mittee, 34 used preserved sleepers now, against 24 in 1868. BARNS. | Myudern Bronze Alloys for Engineering Purposes. (Conecluded.) MANGANESE-BRONZE. The author now cymes to that class of bronzes into the composition of which iron in one form or other enters, and of which there are two principal varieties, namely, manganese-bronze and delta metal. It is stated that some of the ancient bronzes have been found on analysis to contain a small percentage of iron, but it does not appear that any traces of manganese have ever been discovered, It is thought probable that the ancients knew that the addition of iron to bronze would increase its bardness, and in- troduced it for that purpose. Modern in- ventors have proposed combinations of iron with br ss alloys, and some have also intro- duced mangane-e by reducing the black oxide of manganese and combining it with the copper. Until a comparatively recent date, however. none of these alloys appear to have been brought into permanent prac- tical use. More than 100 years ago James Kier proposed an alloy of ro ;arts of iron with 100 parts of copper and 75 parts of zine, and in Jater times Sir Jchn Anderson, when superintendent of the Royel Gun Fac- tories, carried out a number of experiments with similar alloys, and with s me very good results, but none of them appear to have been brought into practical use. The addj- tion of iron unquestionably increases the strength and hardness of these alloys, but, according to some experiments made by Mr. P. M. Parsons, they wou'd appear to acquire these qualities at the expense of ductility and tougtness, and it is probably on this ac- count that this class of alloys had not come into general use up to the time of Mr. Parsons’s experiments. Mr. Alexander Parkes and the Jate Mr. J. D. Morries Stirling, both eminent metallurgists, appear to have been the first to propose and to carry into practice the use of manganese. Mr. Parkes combined manganese alone with cop- per, and used this alloy to form improved alloys of brass and yellow metal, of which to make sheathing, rods, wire, nails and tubes. Mr. Stirling in 1848 proposed to use man- ganese in various brass alloys in which iron was present. At first he combined about 7 per cent. of iron with the zinc, and added to the copper a small percentage of manganese, by reducing the black oxide of manganese with the copper, in the presence of carbone- ceous materials, and then added to it the requisite quantity of the iron and zine alloy to make the improved brass required, Mr. Stirling’s idea was to combine the iron with the zine by fusion, but in practice he found amore ready means of procuring the zinc and iron alloy by employing the deposit found at the bottom of the tanks for contain- ing the melted zinc for galvanizing iron articles. This product consists of zinc with from 4 to 6 per cent. of iron, but this per- centage 's very variable, and the results of its use, therefore, in some cases unreliable. Tbe author is informed that metal made by this process was in use for some time for carriage bearings, on the London and North Wesiern and other railways, with very good results ; but ithas long since been superseded, and does not appear to have ever been intro- duced for any purposes where the require- ments were great strength, hardness and ductility. The time, however, arrived—namely, in 1876—when these requirements were met by the aid of mangane-e in the manganese- bronze of Mr. -. M. Parsons. This alloy is prepared by mixing a small proportion of ferromanganese with copper, and which is afterward made into alloys sianlar to gun- metal, bronze, brass or any other alloy of which ¢ pper forms the base, The ferro- mang.nese is mel ed in a separate crucible, aud is acded to the copper when in a melted state. The effeci of this combination is similar to that produced by the addition of ferromanganese to the decarburized iron in a Bessemer converter. The mangane-e in a metallic state, having a great affinity for ox\ gen, cleanses the copper of any oxides it may contain, by combining with them and rising to the surfac* in the form of slag, which renders the metal dense and homo- geneous, as already explained by the anthor in respect to phosphurus, Accor
