The counter-shaft carries tight and loose pulleys and a pair of cut miter gears to connect with the vertical shaft at the center of top of column. The spindle, feed-screw and elevating-screw are made of machinery steel, and the feed-worm is made of the best tool steel and hardened, and all thrust bearings are ided with phosphor- bronze washers. The machine is provided with very heavy back gear and power feed. Every machine is belted and tested before leaving the shops. In the machine shown in Fig. 2 the ar- rangement of column and driving-gear is similar to that just described, but the arm and spindle-frame have swivels that will re- volve the entire circle, so that a horizontal line of holes may be drilled at any angle par- allel with each other by adjusting the angle of the arm and traversing the saddle on the arm, and a vertical line may be drilled at any angle by adjusting the angle of the spindle- moving the arm verti- cally to any point desired on the column. A device coming into very general notice for extinguishing fires when in an incipient state, either in factories, stores or dwellings, is known as the hand grenade. It has been before the public not much over a year in its perfected form, but in that time a very large number of them have been sold, and they are now to be found upon some of the Sound steamers sailing from New York, in several theatres, hotels and other public buildings and in numerous factories and warehouses all over the country. In several instances their prompt use has saved important estab- lishments from destruction, and from all the facts that can be gathered the hand grenade seems to be an article that deserves high rank among successful forms of fire appa- ratus. The portable chemical extinguishers which have been familiar to the public for many years past, and which have been very useful in various directions, have still left a want unsupplied—namely, the need of some- thing still easier to use, and something which at the same time can be employed by those to whom the chemical apparatus, re- quiring to be strapped on the back, appears to be something complex and capable of use by an expert only. Something is needed so simple in character that women and children can employ it, and that, too, without previous practice or the necessity of special direc- tions. These requirements seem to be fully embodied in the hand grenade, a cut of which is annexed. The Hayward hand grenade, manufactured by the Hayward Hand Grenade Fire Extinguishing Company, 407 Broadway, New York City, is being offered as a desirable and efficient supple- ment to all other forms of fire-extinguishing apparatus that may be in use. The follow- ing particulars concerning it are the result of a somewhat careful investigation of its merits by representatives of this journal : A few days since we witnessed a test of the Hayward hand grenade. A number of dry boards fastened together so as to give a surface of about 150 square feet were sup- ported in an upright position by being flanked at each side by a couple of wings of the same material and extending up about 5 feet. Between these side pieces, and forming a floor for the whole, were other boards. The boards were first entirely coated on the interior with coal tar, and at The Hayward Hand Grenade, the angles at the bottom were placed shavings and other small wood. A quantity of kerosene was thrown over the tarred surface and the kindlings at the bottom. Fire was then applied, and after the boards got well on fire, the flames rising many feet in the air, one of the grenades was broken against the upright surface. Its effect was to instantly extinguish the flames around and above where it struck, leaving only the kindling wood burning in the lower corners, which was practically extinguished by the use of a couple more of the grenades ; we say practically extinguished, beeause, al- though some flame remained in places and all the embers were not put out, the fire had been brought under easy control, and, owing to the surrounding wood being ren- dered incombustible by the fluid thrown on it, did not show any tendency to spread. On inspection the boards were found to be charred to the depth of at least 4% inch. A second attempt was made to fire the upright boards after having recoated them with tar, but, although the tar burned off, the boards remained untouched except in the cracks between them where the liquid from the grenades had not penetrated. The Hayward hand grenade consists es- sentially of a glass globe 4 inches in diame- ter, having a capacity of about 1 pint, which is filled with a fluid of such a chemical composition that, when the grenade is broken and the liquid allowed to come in contact with the fire, immense volumes of chlorine and carbonic-acid gas are generated, with the effect of immediately extinguishing the flame. The general shape of the grenade is spherical, flattened at the bottom to prevent it from rolling when set down, Between the faces are wedge-shaped scores in the surface, which tend to weaken the glass and make it easily breakable, which is a very essential feature of such a fire extinguisher. The grenades are filled through a rather long neck, which also serves as a handle to grasp them by when thrown. To close the open- ing, the neck is filled with Rosendale cement, which hardens to a stonelike consistency and effectually prevents any loss of the fluid by evaporation or otherwise. Wire baskets, so made as to hang against a wall, and with a capacity of from two to six grenades, are furnished for holding them in convenient places, while another method of support is to hang the grenades on pegs by wire loops which are twisted around their necks, Either of these methods is very convenient, as the baskets or hooks can be arranged in different parts of s building, so as to be readily ac- cessible in case of fire. All these details, though of comparatively little importance, add greatly to the prac- tical value of this fire extinguisher. The composition of the liquid contained in these grenades is not known except to the manufacturers, but that it is practically harmless is abundantly proved by wetting the hands with it, or even tasting it, as may be done without any injurious result.
