Gas Puddling and Heating Furnaces.— The “ Casson-Bicheroux ” System.* I believe that the first practical results in the way of puddling and heating by gas may be eredited to Sir C. W. Siemens, although experiments had been previously made in what may be termed “ semi-gas-furnaces ” by Mr. John Jucks and others. I have no means at command of giving the exact date when the first gas-puddling furnaces were attempted by Sir C. W, Siemens, but I recol- lect that in 1862 he made trials at the Earl of Dudley’s Round Oak Iron Works, which, however, did not prove a success.
