Handle Old Iron and Stee! | (Continued from Page 1.) of the manufacturers of that district was formed late in 1882 to investigate the vari- ous methods of steel manufacture, and to determine the grade of steel that would pro duce nails of svperior toughness, rigidity and finish, and that could be as easily cut upon their machines as wrought iron. These investigations were carefully con ducted, and it was ascertained that soft steel could be made by the Bessemer process that would meet all of these requirements In order to erect a large plant to supply their factories with steel, a charter was pro cured for the Wheeling Steel Company, with a capital stock of $1,000,000—the maximum amount allowed under the laws of the State of West Virginia—but irreconcilable differ ences arose concerning the equitable distri bution of this stock, some companies claim ing a larger apportionment than others were willing to concede. The manufacture of steel nails was about to be abandoned when the Riverside Iron Works determired to erect a Bessemer steel plant adjoining their blast furnace, for the purpose of supplying themselves with a reliable quality of soft steel. The erection of this plant was com menced August 6, 1883, and is expected to be in operation early in May next. This plant has been designed by competent en gineers after a careful study of existing Bes- semer works, and every means have been brought to bear to render it perfect in all its details, It will be equipped with the best machinery obtainable, and all labor-saving appliances wiil be introduced The founda- tions have been carefully constructe1 with a view to permanence and strength, and the buildings are fire-proof wherever exposed to danger. Its location, as shown by the ac- companying drawing, is on the east bank of the Ohio River, one mile below Wheeling, and immediately between the Pennsylvania and the Baltimore and Ohio. systems of rail- roads, so that their facilities for receiving and shipping will be unsurpassed. ‘The steel plant proper consists of cupola house, converting works, blooming mill, blowing engine house, boiler house and water-works. ‘The raw materials of every description will be conveniently delivered by railroad cars on tracks and trestles in close proximity to the different departments of the plant, though it is intended ultimately to convey the hot metal direct from the blast furnace to the converters. The works will be started and operated for a while by conveying the pig iron, coke and limestone in barrows, in the usual manner, to the hydraulic hoist marked 1, and elevated to the cupola platforms. The hot metal will be tapped from the cupolas marked 2, which are 8 feet in diameter by 56 feet high, into an iron ladle marked 3, resting on a platform scale ready for weighing. ‘This ladle will then be conveyed by acrane and its contents poured into a pair of 5-ton converters marked 4, in which it will be blown and afterward poured into the steel ladle shown on the hydraulic crane marked 5. By means of this steel-ladle crane the casting will be effected in the usual manner, yielding steel ingots 12 x 17x 54 incheslong. The molds will be placed in the pit and stripped from the ingot by the ingot hydraulic crane marked 7. This crane will also lift the in gots from the pit and deposit them on the scale for weighing marked 20. The heating furnaces marked 22 will be charged and drawn with the aid of the hydraulic crane marked 8, The ingots, after proper heating, will be taken from the furnaces by this crane and placed on the table in front of the blooming mill. The driven rollers of the table will be put in operation and the ingot passed back and forth through the rolls of the reversing blooming mill until it will be reduced toa slab 3 x 15 inches cross-section. This slab will then be conveyed by means of tables supplied with driven rollers to a very powerful vertical shear, where it will be cut into blooms 3 x 15 x 15 inches long. These blooms will be loaded upon cars and con veyed to the plate mill of the Riverside Iron Works, in Wheeling, where they will be rolled into nail plate and cut into nails in the usual manner now prac ticed with wrought iron. It is the intention of the company in the near future to remove their plate mill and erect it in the immediate vicinity of their steel works. The blooming mill will be a 32-inch two high reversing mill driven by a pair of en gines with steam cylinders 28 x 48 inch stroke. The rollers of the tables will be driven by a pair of small engines not shown in the drawing. The reversing of the en gines operating the tables and elevating the rolls will be effected by means of hydraulic cylinders operated by levers conveniently arranged for the engine and roller. The shear will be driven by a vertical engine 14x 18 inch stroke. All of this machmery will be unusually heavy, of the latest design, and embodying all the improvements sug gested by practice in other blooming mills, The blast will be supplied to the cupolas by two No. ro Sturtevant fans, located on the second floor of the blowing engine house The blast will be supplied to the converters by two very heavily-constructed vertical blowing engines of special design, each with steam cylinders 42 x 48 inc h stroke and air cylinders 54 x 48 inch stroke The hydraulic pressure for the entire plant will be furnished by two pressure pumps each with steam cylinders 24 x 24 inch stroke, and water cylinders 8 x 24 inch located in the blowing engine house A large accumulator marked 18 will be placed in the converting works.
